Chester County Commemorates Juneteenth with Historic Reenactment

Civil Rights Summer GIF

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County's Juneteenth celebration on Wednesday included a reenactment at the historic courthouse of the moment in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned of their emancipation. The event, followed by a march to West Chester Bethel AME Church, brought the community together to honor this significant day. A supper at Milestone Events, attended by about 150 people, featured traditional dishes and performances by the Juneteenth Choir and West Chester Dance Works. Local leaders, including Mayor Lillian DeBaptiste and County Commissioners, Marian Moskowitz and Eric Roe participated in the events, underscoring Juneteenth's role in promoting reflection on freedom, equality, and justice.

Commemorating the Declaration of Independence at Hopewell Furnace

ELVERSON, PA — On July 4, the National Park Service and Friends of Hopewell Furnace will host their annual ceremony commemorating the 248th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The event, held at the historic Ironmaster’s House, includes performances by local musicians, presentations of colors by Scouts, and readings of winning essays by local students. The public is invited to join in reading the Declaration of Independence. Throughout the day, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., various free activities will be available, including orientation talks, molding and aluminum casting demonstrations, Junior Ranger activities, and blacksmithing demonstrations.

Coatesville Youth Initiative Hosts Free Bike Giveaway Event

COATESVILLE, PA — The Coatesville Youth Initiative is hosting a Free Bike Giveaway Event on June 21, 2024, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Benner Building. The event will provide refurbished bikes, bike safety tips, and free refreshments, fostering community spirit and encouraging outdoor activity.

Downingtown Celebrates 44th Annual Good Neighbor Day on July 4

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — On July 4, Downingtown's 44th Annual Good Neighbor Day will take place at Kerr Park, providing a full day of community activities aimed at supporting local ambulance and rescue squads. The event includes the Run for Life race, Krapf’s Canoe & Kayak Rotary River Challenge, carnival rides, and a fireworks display. Streets will be decorated with red hearts to symbolize community love, and the Downingtown Has Talent show will highlight local performers. The celebration, organized by volunteers under the Good Neighbor Day 501(c)(3) non-profit, aims to raise funds for local emergency services. Vendors will offer food, concessions, and crafts

Uwchlan Township Scales Down Community Day Amid Volunteer Shortage

UWCHLAN TWP — This year, Uwchlan Township's Community Day, a beloved event for 25 years, will be significantly scaled down due to a lack of volunteers. Traditionally supported by community members, sponsors, vendors, and Township staff, the event has offered a day of festivities, rain or shine. However, insufficient volunteer numbers have led to the difficult decision to limit the event to just the fireworks display, removing all other activities such as food trucks, rides, and entertainment. The Township remains dedicated to celebrating the community and is looking into alternative ways to host successful events in the future. While the reduction is disappointing for many residents, the fireworks display aims to maintain the spirit of the day. The Township encourages those interested in supporting future events to volunteer for the Community Day Committee or assist on event days.
