West Chester Council Makes Backyard Chickens More Accessible

WEST CHESTER, PA — The West Chester Borough Council is set to relax its regulations on backyard chickens. The revised ordinance, spearheaded by Solicitor Kristin Camp, will reduce the setback requirement from property lines from 10 feet to 5 feet, though chickens must remain 25 feet away from buildings. The decision, supported by the majority of the council, aims to accommodate residents with larger properties who struggle with current regulations. The ordinance will maintain strict guidelines on sanitation, waste disposal, and feed storage, while ensuring hens are kept in fenced, screened rear yards. The existing ban on roosters and outdoor slaughtering of hens will remain in effect.

Chester County’s NALT Awarded Seal of Excellence by PANO

CHADDS FORD, PA — The North American Land Trust (NALT), headquartered in Chester County, has been awarded the Seal of Excellence by the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations (PANO). This recognition follows a comprehensive evaluation of NALT’s mission, leadership, ethics, and financial practices, demonstrating the trust's commitment to the highest standards of nonprofit governance and operational management. NALT, which protects over 138,000 acres in 24 states, continues its mission to conserve natural and cultural resources, including recent efforts such as acquiring historic properties and opening public preserves like Brinton Run in Delaware County.

Funding Initiative for High-Speed Internet Expansion in Rural Chester County

If you feel the desire to write a book, what would it be about?

CHESTER COUNTY, PA — Rural communities in Chester County will soon benefit from improved high-speed internet access thanks to a new funding initiative from the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA). Addressing the digital divide that leaves 17 percent of rural Americans without adequate broadband, the PBDA has allocated funds from the CPF Broadband Infrastructure Program to support connectivity projects in seven Chester County municipalities. This effort, part of a larger state-wide initiative affecting 13 counties, will see Comcast deliver gigabit-plus speeds to previously underserved or unserved areas.

Revitalization of Ash Park in Coatesville Secures Nearly $1 Million in Funding

COATESVILLE — U.S. Representative Chrissy Houlahan visited Coatesville to review plans for revitalizing Ash Park, funded by a nearly $960,000 Community Project Funding Grant. The 9.3-acre park, central to residents within a three-mile radius, has deteriorated from extensive use and stormwater damage. The grant will support the initial phases of the Ash Park Master Plan, focusing on expanded play areas, a splash pad, a new common area, and improved stormwater infrastructure. Representative Houlahan, alongside U.S. Senator Bob Casey, facilitated the funding through the House Appropriations Committee.

Rain Garden at Caln Municipal Park Gets a Refresh from Local Volunteers

CALN, PA — In a concerted effort to improve environmental sustainability, volunteers from the Penn State Extension Master Watershed Stewards program in Chester and Delaware Counties worked to refresh the rain garden at Caln’s Municipal Park. Their timely intervention, just before anticipated rain, included planting native Carolina Allspice shrubs. This rain garden plays a vital role in managing stormwater runoff from the adjacent parking lot, filtering out pollutants, and mitigating flood risks. Additionally, the garden supports local biodiversity by offering habitat for pollinators and birds, while also enhancing the park’s visual appeal.

Reconstruction of Historic Hadfield Road Bridge to Begin

EAST BRANDYWINE, PA — Chester County has announced that reconstruction of Bridge #244, the Hadfield Road Bridge over Beaver Creek, will begin in early 2024, with a start date set for May 10. The existing bridge, a 46-foot-long, 16-foot-wide structure built in 1913, currently supports one lane of traffic and has a weight limit of 3 tons. Recognized as a historic resource, it will be replaced by a new bridge that will be 50 feet long and 24 feet wide, featuring architectural surface treatments on the parapets and designed to meet current load standards of 40 tons. The project aims to provide a safe and structurally sound crossing for all travelers on Hadfield Road. During construction, the bridge will be closed, and a 1.9-mile detour will be put in place to facilitate traffic flow.
