Chester County Couple Arrested in Tragic Death of 12-Year-Old Girl

WEST CALN TWP — A Chester County couple, Rendell A. Hoagland and Cindy Marie Warren, have been charged with the abuse and death of Hoagland's 12-year-old daughter, Malinda, in West Caln Township. The child's severe injuries, indicative of prolonged abuse, led to her death despite emergency medical efforts. The couple, who have a concerning history with child-related offenses, were arrested following evidence obtained from their home security cameras.

Altercation and Gunfire Result in Arrest in Coatesville

COATESVILLE — On May 1st, Coatesville police were called to South 10th Avenue following reports of shots fired. The incident involved Sharode Smith, 23, who reportedly discharged a firearm into the air after an argument stemming from a simple greeting escalated. Located later on East Harmony Street, Smith was found with a firearm and arrested without resistance. Charged with aggravated assault among other offenses, he is currently held at Chester County Prison after not meeting the $50,000 bail requirement.

Chester County School Bus Competition Won by West Chester SD Drivers

DOWNINGTOWN — At the 43rd Annual School Bus Safety Competition hosted by the Chester County Transportation Association, West Chester Area School District's bus drivers showcased superior skills and safety knowledge, winning first place against competitors from various districts. The event featured a written test and driving challenges. Key performers included Joanne Cowan, Patti Carey, Elise Groff, and Cheryl Vogelsang, who all secured top-five positions, earning spots at the upcoming state competition in June.

Chester County Library to Spotlight Local Authors at Inaugural Event

EXTON — On May 19th, the Chester County Library in Exton will debut its inaugural "Read Local!" event, featuring a selection of 30 authors and illustrators from the local area. This gathering is designed to celebrate and promote the works of those who have self-published or are published through independent outlets. The event, running from 1 pm to 4 pm, will allow visitors to meet the creators, purchase books, and learn about the authors' and illustrators' experiences and processes. No registration is required

Nonprofit Meet & Greet to Connect Chester County Leaders and Community

EXTON — The United Way of Chester County’s Leadership Chester County program will conduct its Nonprofit Meet & Greet event on May 8 in Exton, PA. This event will showcase over 26 local nonprofits and is aimed at connecting them with potential board members, including the program’s graduating class and its alumni. The initiative aims to empower business professionals to serve on nonprofit boards, thereby addressing community issues and enhancing leadership within the county.

Boot Road Bridge Construction to Cause Weeklong Traffic Delays

EAST CALN TWP— PennDOT has begun a week-long project on the Boot Road bridge in East Caln Township, causing daily lane closures and expected traffic delays as part of a $13.3 million infrastructure upgrade. Closures can be expected from May 6th-May 10th from 9am-3pm.
