West Chester's Living Legend: Dr. Clifford DeBaptiste's Centennial Tribute in Congress
Representative Chrissy Houlahan paid tribute to Dr. Clifford DeBaptiste, a central figure in West Chester's community, as he nears his 100th birthday. Houlahan's address on the House floor eloquently traced DeBaptiste's journey from his upbringing in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to his distinguished military service and subsequent contributions to West Chester.
After serving in the Army, DeBaptiste, accompanied by his family, settled in West Chester, where he earned degrees from West Chester University and Lincoln University, the first Historically Black College or University offering degrees. His entrepreneurial endeavors with wife Inez resulted in the establishment of DeBaptiste Funeral Homes, Inc., a business that once operated six locations and currently maintains two.
DeBaptiste's leadership extended to the Pennsylvania State Board of Funeral Directors, where he served 13 terms as chairman, and various local boards, including West Chester University's Board of Trustees and the First National Bank of West Chester. In 1994, he made history as West Chester's first Black mayor, leading the revitalization of the downtown area and significantly expanding the local restaurant scene.
Post-retirement from public office, DeBaptiste's influence endures. His daughter, Lillian, continues his legacy as West Chester's current mayor. Recognitions include a plaza, lecture series, and residential street bearing his name, as well as honorary doctorates from West Chester University and Lincoln University.
Representative Houlahan's tribute emphasizes DeBaptiste's lasting impact on West Chester as he approaches his centenary, with the community continuing to celebrate his unwavering dedication to service.
