West Chester Mourns the Loss of Dr. Robert Hanna, Trailblazing Physician and Community Leader

Dr. Robert Howard Hanna, affectionately known as "Doc," passed away at 93, leaving a legacy as the first African American physician in West Chester. Born on November 26, 1928, Doc's medical practice was marked by house calls and a holistic approach, distinguishing him as one of the last great general practitioners. Beyond his medical contributions, Doc played a pivotal role in ending segregation in West Chester, earning him the status of a community statesman.

Doc's impact extended beyond medicine; he was an active member of various organizations, including the Human Relations Council, the Board of Trustees for Lincoln University, and the Friends Association for the care and protection of children. His collaborations with friends, former mayor Clifford DeBaptiste, and Reverend Anderson Porter, known as "The Three Amigos," symbolized a holistic approach to community well-being.

Known for his warmth, humor, and zest for life, Doc's influence reached far beyond his medical practice. A viewing and service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, February 8, at Milestone Events/DeBaptiste Funeral Home.
