Hankin Group Expands Haywood Business Park with New Speculative Buildings

UWCHLAN TWP — Hankin Group has initiated the expansion of Haywood Business Park in Chester County, adding two speculative buildings totaling 70,000 square feet. The first building, a 35,000-square-foot facility at 713 Haywood Drive, is set to be completed in the first quarter of 2025 and is already available for leasing. The development is strategically located near major highways, including Route 100, I-76, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, offering easy access to Philadelphia and its key infrastructure. The business park is also close to Eagleview, a mixed-use community developed by Hankin Group, which features residential, commercial, and retail spaces.

West Chester Co-op to Open in Early 2025, Offering Locally Sourced Goods

WEST CHESTER, PA — West Chester will soon welcome a new cooperative grocery store, the West Chester Co-op, expected to open in early 2025. Located at 204 W. Market St., the co-op will offer a range of locally sourced and organic products, including fresh produce, dairy, and dry goods. The store, covering 2,600 square feet of retail space, aims to provide a community-oriented shopping experience, fostering connections among residents and supporting local farmers and producers. Membership in the co-op requires a one-time fee of $400, which includes voting rights and access to discounts and dividends.

Kennett Square Powerball Ticket Wins $150,000

KENNETT SQUARE, PA — In Chester County, a Powerball ticket sold at The Market at Liberty Place has won $150,000. The winning ticket matched four white balls and the red Powerball number in the July 27 drawing. The numbers drawn were 3, 31, 37, 40, and 64, with the Powerball number 17. The prize was tripled from $50,000 to $150,000 because the ticket holder opted for the $1 Power Play feature. The retailer will receive a $500 bonus for the sale of the winning ticket.

The identity of the winner remains undisclosed until the prize is claimed. Pennsylvania Lottery winners have one year from the date of the drawing to claim their prizes. The lottery encourages players to sign the back of their tickets to secure their winnings. On the same drawing date, over 31,300 other Pennsylvania Powerball tickets won various prizes, including those with the Power Play and Double Play options.

Town Tour Highlights Baptist Church in the Great Valley

TREDYFFRIN TWP — This Thursday, August 1, the Town Tour series continues with a visit to the Baptist Church in the Great Valley, a historic site founded by Welsh settlers in 1711. The tour will offer attendees an opportunity to explore the 1805 church building and learn about the lives of several notable figures buried there, including Rev. David Jones, a chaplain during the Revolutionary War, and Rev. Leonard Fletcher, who played a key role in the local anti-slavery movement.

The church, an enduring symbol of the area's rich history, provides a glimpse into the past and the lives of those who contributed to the community's development. The tour begins at 945 N. Valley Forge Road, Devon, where participants can register onsite. The event is open to the public, with no prior registration required.

West Chester Aims to Restore Firefly Population in Everhart Park

Picture with fireflies in the night forest. Firefliy in high resolution

WEST CHESTER, PA — In an effort to revive the dwindling firefly population in Everhart Park, West Chester officials are implementing measures to reduce light pollution. State Senator Carolyn Comitta and Borough Councilman Bernie Flynn have attributed the decline in fireflies to the bright LED lights installed in the park four years ago. These lights have disrupted the insects' natural mating patterns, leading to fewer sightings.

The park's meadow along Hemlock Alley, an ideal environment for fireflies, has been adversely affected by the increased brightness. To address this, the borough will turn off one light and significantly dim two others during June and July, the peak firefly season. Additionally, light shields will be installed to direct illumination downward, minimizing its spread.

This effort aligns with a broader movement to promote "dark skies," aiming to reduce light pollution and its negative impact on wildlife and human health. The state assembly is considering new lighting regulations, and West Chester Borough has a dark sky ordinance for new developments.
