Local Support Helps Bring Back Upper Uwchlan’s Police Dog Program

Dexter and Ofc. Zmuida

UPPER UWCHLAN TWP — The Upper Uwchlan Township Police Department has reinstated its K-9 program after a decade-long hiatus, introducing Dexter, a dual-purpose police dog trained in patrol tactics and firearms detection — the only K-9 in Chester County with this specialization. Dexter and Officer Dan Zmuida completed their training and are already operational, having recently assisted in locating a fleeing assault suspect in a neighboring town. The program was made possible through donations from local business owners and ongoing veterinary support from Eagle Animal Hospital.

$75K Emergency Grant Helps Sustain Chester County Food Bank

EXTON, PA — In response to significant federal funding reductions, Chester County has fast-tracked a $75,000 American Rescue Plan grant to support the Chester County Food Bank. The early disbursement is part of a broader county effort to address immediate food insecurity, which includes employee donation drives and continued agricultural partnerships. County-run programs at correctional facilities have produced over 6,300 pounds of food this year alone, while Springton Manor Farm remains a vital year-round growing site for fresh produce.

Coatesville Kids Learn to Recycle at Library Workshop

COATESVILLE, PA — The “Keep Coatesville Beautiful” program, hosted by the 2nd Century Alliance at the Coatesville Area Public Library, brought together over 50 children and families for a recycling education session. Led by representatives from the Chester County Solid Waste Authority and Litter Lifters, the event covered what can and cannot be recycled, the environmental impact of waste, and ways to reduce consumption at home. The children also learned about the Lanchester Landfill’s dual role as a waste site and certified wildlife habitat.

Chester County Nonprofit Brings Therapy Within Reach for Children in Crisis

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — On the latest episode of Good 2 Know in Chester County” Jenny Leigh sits down with Leslie and Jacquie from “A Child’s Light”

A Child’s Light, a nonprofit based in Chester County, provides trauma-informed therapy to children ages 2 to 18 who have experienced abuse or other severe emotional distress. Founded by Leslie Holt just before the onset of COVID-19, the organization has since matched over 200 children with consistent, long-term mental health care. Therapists work on a sliding scale to allow children to continue treatment for up to a year, and services include equine, art, music, somatic, and talk therapy. The model is cost-effective and scalable, aiming to address a growing mental health crisis affecting tens of thousands of children across the region. A Child’s Light also engages with schools, law enforcement, and local families to raise awareness and remove barriers to care.
