Turnpike Workers Pull Two Women to Safety Before Car Explodes Near Malvern
MALVERN, PA — During a February snowstorm, Pennsylvania Turnpike workers Ralph Valenteen and Lucy Calancea were on duty at the Devault Maintenance Shed in Malvern when a car crashed into a tree near the entrance and quickly caught fire. Without protective equipment or hesitation, the two employees rushed outside and, with the help of a passing motorist, pulled both women from the burning vehicle. Moments after the victims were moved to safety, the car's fuel tank ignited and the vehicle exploded. Authorities have not released the cause of the crash, but officials acknowledged that both women almost certainly owe their lives to the swift actions of the two workers. The Pennsylvania Turnpike formally recognized Valenteen and Calancea for their bravery, and both employees remained on scene with the victims until medical crews arrived.
Murder, Gunfire, and Stalking: Chester County DA's Office Scores Three Major Outcomes

WEST CHESER, PA — In the latest update from the county’s DA’s office three Chester County men faced serious legal consequences in recent weeks. Holden Hoffsis of Phoenixville was sentenced to up to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to fatally shooting his friend Daniel Gray during a late-night gaming session in November 2024. Damonte Reason of Coatesville received a sentence of up to 16 years for firing at four people on a residential porch in 2023, with DNA evidence sealing the case. And John Kearney of Oxford was convicted on eleven stalking counts after a six-year campaign of harassment that continued even while he was incarcerated, during which he attempted to contact his victim more than 236 times by phone.
A Road Map for the Data Center Boom: Chester County Equips Municipalities With New Planning Guide

WEST CHESTER, PA — As proposals for large-scale data centers continue to emerge across southeastern Pennsylvania, many local municipalities find themselves weighing decisions about a land use they have limited experience regulating. The Chester County Planning Commission, working alongside the Montgomery County Planning Commission, has developed a new Data Center Ordinance Guide to address that gap directly.
The guide provides two key resources for local governments: research-backed information on the land-use impacts data centers typically bring to a community, drawn from partners across the state, and model ordinance language that municipalities can tailor to their own zoning and planning frameworks. The goal is to give planning boards and elected officials a stronger foundation as they navigate an increasingly common and consequential type of development proposal. The guide is available on the Chester County Planning Commission's website.
PennDOT Announces Yellow Springs Road Closure Beginning April 13

WEST PIKELAND TWP — Starting Monday, April 13, a stretch of Yellow Springs Road in West Pikeland Township will be closed to through traffic while PennDOT crews complete a pipe replacement project. The closure affects the segment between Route 113 (Kimberton Road) and Lower Pine Creek Road and will be in effect on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Tuesday, April 21. A detour using Route 113, Route 401 (Conestoga Road), and Lower Pine Creek Road will be in place for the duration. Local property access along the affected corridor will not be interrupted. The work is weather dependent, and drivers in the area should expect potential delays during active construction hours. Real-time traffic and road condition updates are available through the 511PA service online, by app, or by phone.
