Former Treasurer Charged With Stealing $11,300 From Thorndale Firefighter Relief Fund
CALN TWP — Mack David Roberts II, a 43-year-old East Fallowfield resident, has been charged with stealing $11,300 from the Thorndale Volunteer Fireman's Relief Association, where he served as treasurer until January of this year. Caln Township police say the thefts occurred over a three-month stretch from August through October 2025, resulting in nine felony charges — including theft by unlawful taking, theft by failure to make required disposition of funds, and receiving stolen property — as well as a misdemeanor tampering charge.
The criminal activity was detected by the Pennsylvania Department of the Auditor General's Bureau of Fire Relief Audits, which distributes and monitors state funds allocated to volunteer firefighter relief associations statewide. Roberts was arrested last week, released on $5,000 unsecured bail, and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 24 before Magisterial District Judge Ann Feldman.
Fire company leadership stressed that Roberts served only the relief association — a separately governed body — and never had access to the fire company's own finances. He has since been suspended from both organizations.
Longwood Gardens to Host Symphonic Premiere and Mass Declaration Reading for America's 250th
KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Longwood Gardens will mark America's 250th anniversary with an ambitious evening on June 25, combining a symphonic world premiere with a large-scale civic reading of the Declaration of Independence. The Brandywine Valley Symphony kicks off the 7:30 p.m. concert with Dare to Declare, a Chester County Community Foundation initiative in which community leaders and concertgoers read the Declaration aloud together — an experience organizers expect to draw roughly 1,000 participants, potentially making it the region's largest public reading of the document.
The musical highlight is the debut of An American Dream, a commissioned medley of patriotic songs arranged chronologically across 250 years of American history. Iowa composer Aaron Fullan wrote the piece after a serendipitous introduction through Symphony Vice President Colin Hanna, who had the original concept for the work. Fullan, largely self-taught as a composer and deeply influenced by John Williams, delivered a piece that Hanna described as moving him to tears.
The broader program includes works by Dvořák, Copland, Bernstein, Florence Price, Gershwin, and Williams. Tickets are $65 for adults and $20 for students, with all-day Longwood Gardens admission included. Purchase at bvsymphony.org.
Back-to-Back Astronomy Events Around the Summer Solstice

EXTON, PA — Chester County residents have a rare double opportunity this weekend to explore the sky — day and night. On Friday, June 19, Chester County Parks + Preservation and the Chester County Astronomical Society host a solar viewing event at the Chester Valley Trail trailhead in Exton Park from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Ranger Rita will guide participants through telescopic views of the sun's surface features, including sunspots and plasma loops. Registration available online here
The following evening, a Summer Solstice Star Party at Hibernia County Park's Pavilion No. 5 runs from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m., with Ranger Henry leading the program. The night sky lineup is exceptional: a waxing crescent moon in sharp detail and an uncommon near-alignment of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn — all five visible planets — stretching across the horizon together.
