Two Local Teams Secure District Playoff Victories on Friday Night
DOWNINGTOWN, PA β Bishop Shanahan's football team captured the District 1-4A championship Friday night with a 42-21 victory over Pope John Paul II, marking the Eagles' first district title since 2021. After struggling against Pope John Paul II in recent years, Shanahan's defense forced five turnovers while the rushing attack dominated. The Eagles advance to face undefeated North Pocono in the PIAA Class 4A Tournament first round.
In District 1-6A quarterfinal play, top-seeded Pennridge reversed a 43-point loss from 2023, defeating eighth-seeded Downingtown East 21-9. The Rams controlled the second half, running 37 plays to the Cougars' nine.
Fourth-seeded Coatesville ended an offensive slump with a 14-0 victory over Council Rock South, benefiting from the return of injured senior quarterback Matt Ortega Jr. The Red Raiders had been shut out in consecutive games during his absence.
Pennridge will face Coatesville in the semifinals next Friday at 7:00 p.m., with the winner advancing to meet either North Penn or Neshaminy in the district championship.
