Born Deaf, Now 18: A Road Sign Returns to the Family It Once Guarded

UWCHLAN TWP — When Tommy Simpson's family moved to their corner-lot home in Uwchlan Township in 2011, they asked the township to install a "Deaf Child Area" caution sign near their property. Tommy had been born deaf — a surprise to a family with no history of hearing loss — and his parents wanted passing drivers to stay alert while he played outside. With bilateral cochlear implants received just after his first birthday and years of auditory-verbal therapy behind him, Tommy eventually transitioned from the Clarke School for Hearing and Speech into mainstream schooling.

Now 18, he has more than kept pace. A National Honor Society member at Bishop Shanahan High School, Tommy takes a rigorous schedule of honors and AP courses, plays baseball, competes in indoor track, and has been nominated as Secretary of his school's Student Council executive board. As he begins the college application process, he's focused on business with a concentration in supply chain management, and hopes to pursue graduate study in international business.

With Tommy no longer a child in need of the sign's protection, the township retired it — and gave it to him as a birthday gift. What once warned strangers to drive carefully now stands as a record of how far he has come.

Skip the Screen Time: Uwchlan Township Releases a Daily Outdoor Activity Guide for Kids

UWCHLAN TWP — Uwchlan Township's Historical Commission has released a Children's Summer Outdoor Calendar offering a different Chester County activity for every day in July. The free guide covers everything from visits to Marsh Creek State Park and Anselma Mill to quieter exercises like frog-listening and trail scavenger hunts. Copies are available on the township website, at the township lobby, and at the Edith P. Moore Schoolhouse.

Each day of the month features a different activity, ranging from visits to well-known destinations like Marsh Creek State Park, Hibernia Park, Anselma Mill, and the Struble Trail to smaller, hands-on exercises that require little more than a pencil or a willingness to sit still by a pond. The calendar is designed to encourage children to engage more closely with the landscape around them, with activities that weave together outdoor recreation, local history, and environmental awareness.

DA Joins Multi-Agency Training Rooted in the Lessons of a School Shooting

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County officials convened at West Chester University on June 8 for a multi-day training designed to extract operational lessons from one of the most scrutinized law enforcement failures in recent memory: the response to the 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 students and two teachers were killed.

District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe attended alongside dozens of law enforcement officers and school officials from across the county. By bringing together both law enforcement and school administrators, the training aimed to improve coordination between the two groups in the event of a future emergency — applying federal findings to local protocols before they are ever needed.

Stop Signs and Fresh Striping Coming to Rice Boulevard Intersection

UWCHLAN TWP — Drivers passing through the intersection of Rice Boulevard and Wharton Boulevard in Uwchlan Township will encounter traffic improvement work this week.
