Ribbon-Cutting Set for New Pollinator Garden at Johnsontown Park

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — The Johnsontown Park Community Pollinator Garden in Downingtown will officially open to the public on Saturday, May 23, in a free morning event that also marks the garden's first birthday. Hosted by the volunteer organization Restore Our Roots, the celebration runs from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and will begin with a meet-and-greet before a 10:15 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The fencing that has surrounded the garden during its first growing season will come down as part of the opening, and organizers will publicly thank the volunteers, borough officials, staff and sponsors who supported the project. Following the ceremony, members of Restore Our Roots will lead tours of the garden and answer questions about its design, the native plants on display and the pollinators they are meant to attract.

The garden features walking paths and a quiet spot called the Resting Rock, and is intended to serve as both a habitat for bees, butterflies and other pollinators and an outdoor classroom for residents interested in native plant ecosystems. The event is open to all ages and includes free parking. Johnsontown Park is located at 122 Viaduct Avenue, Downingtown.

Chester County Honors First Responders, Remembers Fallen State Trooper

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County commissioners issued proclamations on May 13 honoring National Police Week and Emergency Medical Services Week, with a tribute to Corporal Timothy O'Connor of the Pennsylvania State Police, who was killed during a traffic stop in West Caln Township on March 8. First responders who rushed to the scene, including Westwood emergency medical workers and West Caln Police Officer Kevin McCarthy, were recognized at the meeting in West Chester.

PennDOT Paving Work to Bring Nightly Delays on Bypass

CALN TWP — Overnight lane closures will affect westbound U.S. 30 on the Coatesville-Downingtown Bypass next week as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation continues a multi-million-dollar resurfacing project. From Monday, May 18, through Friday, May 22, a single lane will be closed between Airport Road and Route 340 each night from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. while crews mill and pave the roadway.

The closures are part of a broader $9.3 million project along the western portion of the bypass, covering the City of Coatesville and the townships of Caln, Sadsbury, Valley and West Caln. Work in the corridor includes milling, base repairs, a new asphalt overlay, replacement of edge-line rumble strips and fresh pavement markings, all intended to extend the life of the road and improve safety for travelers.

Chambers Lake to Close Briefly for Invasive Plant Treatment

COATESVILLE, PA — Chester County Parks and Preservation has announced that Chambers Lake will close briefly next week so that licensed professionals can apply targeted aquatic herbicide to control invasive plant species. The closure will begin at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, May 19, and continue until the application is finished sometime in the afternoon of Tuesday, May 20, when the lake will reopen.

Three additional treatments, each requiring a similar overnight closure, are scheduled at intervals of roughly three weeks, with exact dates dependent on weather. Chester County Parks and Preservation said it will share advance notice of each upcoming closure through its social media accounts and website.
