Chester County Prison Honors Chaplain's Five Decades of Service with Chapel Dedication

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County Prison recently dedicated its chapel to Chaplain Jack Crans in recognition of his 53 years of service to the institution. Since 1973, Crans has ministered to incarcerated individuals, correctional staff, and their families, earning praise from prison leadership for his ability to build trust and foster hope in a difficult environment. The Chester County Prison Board credited him with strengthening collaboration between faith groups, law enforcement, and civic organizations, while Acting Warden Brian Sheller highlighted the chapel's motto, "Broken Hearts — Unbroken Hope," as central to his mission. Crans' impact reaches beyond the prison: in 1976 he founded City Gate Mission in Coatesville to offer transitional housing and job training to formerly incarcerated people, and he later created the County Corrections Gospel Mission to support at-risk youth and families affected by incarceration. The newly named John Lawrence "Jack" Crans Chapel remains open to all faiths and denominations, continuing to serve as a place of worship and support within the prison.

From Hibernia Mansion to Nature's Dream: County Photo Contest Winners Named

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County Parks and Preservation has wrapped up its patriotic-themed summer photo contest, announcing two winners after what organizers described as a tough judging process. Allison Connell took the adult category with "Military Uniforms and Flag at Hibernia Mansion," while Sid Ghatta won the kids' division with "An American Dream in Nature." The department is now inviting submissions for its next contest, "Amber and Ash," which runs through October and calls for images of fall colors, harvest themes, and seasonal change — all photographed within county-owned parks and trails. Full contest rules, categories, and the submission link are posted on the county's website.

Chester Valley Trail Extension to Downingtown Advances with Record Regional Funding

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Chester County is among the beneficiaries of a record $322 million investment in Circuit Trails infrastructure recently approved by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission through the FY 2027 Pennsylvania Transportation Improvement Program. The funding, the largest of its kind in the program's history, will extend the Chester Valley Trail to Downingtown along the former P&T rail line, closing a key gap in the county's trail network and strengthening connections to the broader regional system. The Circuit Trails Coalition credited the investment to years of collaboration between local governments, transportation agencies, and community advocates, noting a shift in how trails are viewed — increasingly as critical transportation infrastructure rather than purely recreational spaces. The Chester Valley Trail project is one of several major initiatives funded across the region between fiscal years 2027 and 2030, alongside efforts in Philadelphia, Delaware, Bucks, and Montgomery counties. For Chester County residents, the extension is expected to offer safer routes for commuting and recreation while linking neighborhoods to jobs, schools, and community destinations. The investment builds on a regional trail network approaching 500 miles, with plans to reach 550 miles by 2030 and an eventual goal of more than 850 connected miles across Greater Philadelphia and southern New Jersey.
