PECO Expands Assistance Programs as Energy Costs Strain Pennsylvania Households

PHILADELPHIA, PA β€” PECO Energy Company offers multiple assistance programs for customers struggling with energy bills. The Philadelphia utility's initiatives include financial aid for low-income households, specialized services for customers with disabilities and special needs, and community programs allowing neighbors to support one another. As energy costs continue challenging household budgets across Pennsylvania, these programs provide both immediate relief and sustained support. Customers can access program information and eligibility details through the company's website.

Presidents' Day Hike Planned at County Park

ATGLEN, PA β€” Chester County Parks and Preservation has openings remaining for a Presidents' Day guided hike at Wolf's Hollow County Park on February 16. Ranger Henry will lead the moderate four-mile trek from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Park officials hope recent snowfall will melt before the midday excursion. The holiday hike offers residents an opportunity to explore the county park system during a typically quiet period for outdoor recreation. Advance registration is required for participants.

West Chester Nonprofit Distributes 207,000 Books Through Laundromat Network

WEST CHESTER, PA β€” A West Chester nonprofit is bringing literacy resources to underserved families by placing free children's books in laundromats nationwide. The Laundromat Library League operates in 289 locations across 36 states, having distributed more than 207,000 books since its founding in 2014.

Decorated boxes holding 50 to 60 titles invite families to take books home permanently. The program particularly targets children with limited reading materials at home, with former educator Peggy Staarman noting this as the organization's primary mission.

At West Goshen's Family Laundromat, the impact is evident as young patrons read during wash cycles. Approximately half the books at this location are Spanish or bilingual, addressing the linguistic diversity of users.

The nonprofit operates through 968 volunteers who refresh collections biweekly, funded by small grants and donations. More info online at https://www.laundromatlibraryleague.org/
