NEW GARDEN TWP — Ramiro Caal Jolomna, a 37-year-old resident of New Garden Township, has been convicted on multiple felony charges after admitting to trafficking two immigrant children into forced labor. Authorities say Jolomna brought the girls, ages 12 and 17, into the country from Guatemala through Mexico, then compelled them to work at a local mushroom farm for up to 16 hours a day, seven days a week, without attending school. He allegedly kept most or all of their wages and threatened the girls with deportation if they tried to leave or report him.

Jolomna pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of human trafficking, two counts of involuntary servitude, one count of theft by extortion and one count of receiving stolen property. He is himself undocumented and subject to an immigration detainer. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.

The case was prosecuted by the state Attorney General's human trafficking unit, with support from the Pennsylvania State Police. Officials noted that labor trafficking cases like this one are historically difficult to prosecute and tend to draw less attention than other trafficking crimes.

COATESVILLE, PA — A Chester County sheriff's deputy, Kiri Burgos, was bitten by a large Great Dane while attempting to serve legal papers at a home in Coatesville on Friday, July 17. According to the sheriff's office, a child answered the door and, despite Burgos's request that the door remain closed, opened it further, allowing the dog to rush forward and bite Burgos's left arm. The dog reportedly maintained its grip until a 15-year-old resident managed to pull it back inside.

Burgos received medical treatment for his injuries but returned to duty later that afternoon. A second deputy was later able to serve the papers to the adults at the residence; officials did not disclose the nature of the documents.

WEST CHESTER, PA — Hosts at West Chester-based QVC voted Friday to join SAG-AFTRA, following a monthslong organizing push by the company's television and digital sales personalities. The 53-member group of on-air hosts sells clothing and other merchandise across QVC, HSN and various digital sales channels.

The vote came about a month after the hosts presented QVC management with a petition requesting voluntary union recognition. In that petition, hosts cited concerns that QVC could use artificial intelligence to imitate their images, voices and likenesses without their consent, along with broader concerns about pay equity and transparency in how they are compensated. QVC said it respects the results of the vote and plans to work with the union moving forward.

COATESVILLE, PA — Hibernia Park will mark 97 years of tradition with its annual Old Fiddler's Picnic on Saturday, August 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a rain date set for the following day. The free event will feature performances on the park's main stage as well as casual jam sessions in Fiddler's Cove, where musicians will play guitars, banjos, mandolins and other instruments across bluegrass, old-time and gospel styles. Local musicians can register for stage time beginning at 9 a.m.

In addition to the music, the event will offer food trucks, craft vendors, free wagon rides and yard games, along with guided tours of the historic Hibernia Mansion at 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. for a suggested $3 donation. Gates open at 8:30 a.m., and both admission and parking are free, though organizers ask visitors to bring their own seating, since tents and canopies are prohibited on the field. Alcohol is not allowed, and pets must be kept on a six-foot leash.

For those looking to extend their stay, camping is available for the weekend at two campgrounds within the park — one suited to RVs and small trailers, the other for tent camping near Chambers Lake — on a first-come, first-served basis through online registration. Camping fees are $20 per night for Chester County residents and $30 for non-residents.
