Adrian Martinez Earns Key to the Borough for Community Mural Project

WEST CHESTER, PA — Three new murals now line the walls of Pinckney Hill Commons, a 51-unit housing development in West Chester. The project was led by Adrian Martinez, an internationally recognized artist from Downingtown, with help from dozens of residents. Children who took part signed their names and left painted handprints on the walls.

Mr. Martinez originally thought the work would take a few weeks; it took two years. He credited the residents, saying their sense of ownership made it the best artistic experience of his life.

The murals cover about 70 feet and portray Albert Einstein, Benicio Del Toro and “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo, each in a flowing headdress. Ms. Erivo’s runs 40 feet. Family-tree imagery appears throughout.

At last week’s celebration, leaders of Church Housing Corporation praised the work as a reflection of the community, and Mayor Lillian DeBaptiste presented Mr. Martinez with a Key to the Borough. Community member Regina Lewis, who launched the effort, said the murals have made the building warmer and more welcoming. Mr. Martinez also thanked resident Natasha Haywood, whose photo documentation and advice he said greatly improved the final work. See the story and murals at The Daily Local

Sediment, Flooding and a Shifting Creek: Bicking Dam Questions Go Public

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — A nonprofit citizens group is challenging how the S. Austin Bicking Dam was removed from the Brandywine Creek upstream of Downingtown. The Downingtown Resilience Fund says its concerns were ignored, so it formed a study group that spent more than a year reviewing project documents.

The group will share its findings at a public meeting on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Work2gether Space, 107 East Lancaster Avenue. Seating is limited to about 20, but the meeting will stream via Zoom at downingtownresiliencefund.org.

Members say legacy sediment behind the dam contained PCBs and was released about half a mile upstream of the Downingtown Municipal Water Authority’s intake, and that it is unclear whether the authority was consulted. They also point to changes in the creek’s channel and groundwater flow, including slower drainage of Beaver Creek near Kerr Park, and allege conflicts of interest and departures from procedure.

The fund intends to seek retroactive revocation of the federal permit. Members will also propose flood-control ideas, including crest gates and restoring the old millrace through Kardon Park. A hearing master, former district justice Jeff Valocchi, will review the findings and make recommendations, after which the group will decide its course with attorney Sam Stretton.

Caln Township Among Winners as County Honors Local Planning Leaders

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County 2020 and the Chester County Planning Commission brought back their Citizen Planner Awards on Oct. 15, the first ceremony since the Covid-19 pandemic. The awards honor people and projects that improve communities, protect the environment and promote responsible development.

Caln Township, which borders Downingtown, won the Innovative Plan Award for its Sustainability Task Force report, praised as a practical model for balancing growth and resilience. Coatesville and Natural Lands were honored for revitalizing Ash Park, and Keva Flats, by the Hankin Group and RGS Associates, won for development that included the county’s first floodplain restoration and the reuse of a 1799 cottage and barn.

West Bradford’s Food Fight Delivers 1,869 Pounds to County Food Bank

WEST BRADFORD TWP — West Bradford Township is celebrating the results of the Friendly Food Fight, a food drive pitting the Bradfords against the Borough that concluded on Thursday, Sept. 24.

The drive brought in 1,869 pounds of food and nonperishable goods, all donated to the Chester County Food Bank. Food bank representatives told the township the contribution came at a critical moment, shortly before Thanksgiving and Christmas, when stocks are usually at their lowest point of the year.
