Emergency Routes Cleared: Downingtown Implements Snow Emergency Ahead of Forecasted Storm

Mayor Phil Dague of Downingtown Borough, PA, has declared a proactive snow emergency effective from Thursday, January 18th, 2024, at 9 p.m. This declaration empowers the Downingtown Police Department to clear designated emergency snow routes, with vehicles left along these routes subject to towing. Residents had to relocate their vehicles within one hour of the decree to comply. The snow emergency, crucial for safety during snow removal operations, will continue until lifted. Emergency routes and parking options can be found here.

Other boroughs such as West Chester, Parkesburg, Kennett Square, and Malvern gave similar orders. We have not found anything from surrounding townships but be sure to check your township website or Facebook page.

CCIU Appoints Dr. Jeanne McCarthy to Lead Brandywine Virtual Academy

Brandywine Virtual Academy, under the Chester County Intermediate Unit, welcomes Dr. Jeanne McCarthy as the new division director. The appointment, approved during the Jan. 17 CCIU board meeting, is effective from Feb. 12. Dr. McCarthy's extensive experience in virtual learning and curriculum development aligns with the commitment to quality online education. She brings over 16 years of expertise, having served in key roles at A Step Up Academy and Commonwealth Charter Academy.

Boost for West Chester: $570,000 Allocated for Trails, Streams, and Recreation Center Improvements

State Representative Chris Pielli, representing the 156th Legislative District, has secured $570,000 in funding to bolster local projects dedicated to enhancing trails, streams, preserves, and recreation centers. The funding, derived from the Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program and the Watershed Restoration Protection Program, aims to fortify community initiatives that prioritize environmental conservation and recreational enhancements.

Notable recipients of the grants include East Bradford Township, receiving $100,000 for the Plum Run Trail Construction; Natural Lands Stroud Preserve, receiving $220,000; and West Chester Borough, granted $100,000 for the Hoopes Park Racquet Center Rehabilitation under the Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program. Further support is directed to West Chester Borough for the Taylor Run Stream Restoration, securing $150,000 through the Watershed Restoration Protection Program.
