Chester County Ends Burn Ban After Fire Risks Decline

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County has officially rescinded its ban on open fires following an evaluation of improved weather conditions. The countywide restriction, imposed on October 27 and later extended, was a response to prolonged drought and minimal rainfall, which elevated fire risks significantly. During the ban, the county reported 166 brush fires, 73 mulch and trash fires, and one civilian fatality linked to a brush fire.

Although recent wet weather has reduced fire danger, officials caution that precipitation levels remain below normal, urging continued vigilance. While the burn ban helped curb more severe consequences, the Commissioners’ decision reflects confidence in the reduced risk to public safety. Residents are encouraged to stay mindful of fire safety as conditions may change.

Man Sentenced in Coatesville Shooting Without Admitting Guilt

WEST CHESTER, PA — A Lancaster County man with ties to a long-standing Coatesville feud was sentenced this week for his involvement in a 2023 shooting. Omere Nayshon Peoples, 23, entered an Alford plea to charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and weapon possession, acknowledging enough evidence for a conviction without admitting guilt.

The charges arose from an incident where Peoples fired at a car on East Lincoln Highway in Coatesville. No one was injured, and Peoples' defense attorney described the shooting as self-defense but offered no details in court.

Judge Ann Marie Wheatcraft sentenced Peoples to up to 23 months in prison with eligibility for immediate parole, followed by three years of probation and a required behavioral program.
