Speakeasies and Flapper Dresses: New WCU Exhibit Captures the Jazz Age Spirit

1920’s instruments including a rare Royal Slide Saxophone

WEST CHESTER, PA — This Friday, West Chester University’s Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology opens “Roaring in Secret: Subversion and Change in the 1920s,” an immersive exhibit that delves into the rebellious spirit of the 1920s. Curated by Dr. Michael Di Giovine and Tom Haughey with a team of students, the display features artifacts from flapper dresses to radios, illustrating the era’s social transformation. A hidden speakeasy within the exhibit captures the decade’s spirit of defiance with original bootleg liquor, rare musical instruments, and authentic 1920s memorabilia. The opening reception, with live jazz and Prohibition-era refreshments, takes place Friday evening, and the exhibit continues through 2025. More info here

A Legacy of Service: Downingtown Honors Late Chief Heliker

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — The Downingtown Police Department regrets to announce the passing of retired Police Chief Daniel Heliker, who led the Downingtown Police Department from 1987 to 1998. He leaves a legacy of service and community-first policing. Chief Heliker's tenure saw the launch of bike patrols, a cooperative agreement with East Caln Township, and weekend business checks, fostering community trust and safety. Beyond his official duties, he served as a Minquas Fire Company ambulance driver, embodying his dedication to public service. Chief Heliker previously served in Michigan, where he rose to Deputy Chief, and his influence on Downingtown continues today. He will be laid to rest in Michigan, with his family suggesting memorial contributions to local victim support organizations.

Volunteers Clear Invasive Vines in Broad Run Park

WEST BRADFORD TWP - On Saturday, residents and volunteers came together at Broad Run Park to remove invasive vines that were encroaching on the park’s trees, threatening their health and growth. Alongside a team from Matt’s Mowing, community members cleared the brush and vines, ensuring the trees are better prepared for the coming seasons. Organized by the Land Preservation and Sustainability Committee, this clean-up effort reflects the community’s commitment to preserving local natural spaces.
