YMCA of Greater Brandywine Launches Early Literacy Program with Local Partners

WEST CHESTER, PA — The YMCA of Greater Brandywine has announced a partnership with Chester County Imagination Library to distribute free books to children from birth to age five. This effort, part of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, focuses on improving early childhood literacy, which has been linked to better outcomes in education, employment, and health. By registering for the program, families will receive a new book each month, delivered directly to their homes.

This initiative, in collaboration with Arts Holding Hands and Hearts (AHHAH) and the Justamere Foundation, is expected to enhance literacy skills among young children in Chester County. Studies show that intervening early in a child’s life is key to preventing reading difficulties later on, which can affect their academic and professional futures.

Bam Margera Released from Jail, Headed to Rehab for Treatment

WEST CHESTER, PA — After spending a week in Chester County Jail for a DUI arrest, Bam Margera will move to a rehab facility as part of his ongoing battle with substance abuse. The former "Jackass" star was arrested for driving under the influence, which violated his probation tied to earlier substance-related incidents. In a court hearing, a judge determined that Margera needed rehabilitation, not further jail time. Margera's legal team emphasized that the DUI was a minor setback in an otherwise positive period for the 44-year-old, who has recently married and resumed professional work.

Upper Uwchlan Launches Flag Design Contest to Celebrate Township Heritage

UPPER UWCHLAN TWP — Upper Uwchlan Township is calling on residents and local workers to participate in its extended flag design contest, which aims to create a new township flag that captures the essence of the community. Participants are encouraged to incorporate unique local landmarks, the township logo, or its founding year, 1858, into their designs. The contest, open until October 18, 2024, allows for electronic or in-person submissions, with one entry allowed per household.

The selected design will be featured in the Spring 2025 Township Newsletter, along with recognition for the designer. The flag will be displayed at the township’s administrative office and flown during the Parade of Flags ceremony at the PSATS conference in 2025. More info at the township’s website.

EAST GOSHEN TWP — East Goshen Park will come alive with creativity and music during the 2024 Chester County Art Walk, a six-hour event celebrating local artistry. More than 100 artists will display their work along the park’s trails, representing a variety of mediums to engage art lovers of all ages. The event will also feature live musical performances throughout the day, including headliner Dylan Zangwill, known for his appearances on America's Got Talent and American Idol.

The musical lineup starts with Lisa Jeanette, followed by the Cosmic Pennsylvania Band, before Zangwill takes the stage to close out the day. Attendees can also enjoy food from popular vendors like Greek Express and Buddy's Burgers.
