Trial Begins for Man Charged in 2023 Chester County Courthouse Shooting

Vaughn Yanko

WEST CHESTER, PA — The trial of 23-year-old Vaughn Yanko, charged with attempted first-degree murder, begins this Monday in Chester County. Yanko is accused of shooting a college student from New Jersey during a brief but heated confrontation outside the Historic Chester County Courthouse in January 2023. The incident allegedly began as a verbal dispute over a group of women passing by but quickly escalated into violence. Yanko claimed he acted in self-defense, stating the victim lunged at him. Authorities, however, have indicated there was no evidence that the other men were armed. The shooting left the victim with a ruptured aorta, and he survived only because a police officer rushed him to the hospital without waiting for an ambulance. Yanko has been out on $500,000 bail since his arrest and now faces multiple charges. Jury selection begins Monday, with the trial expected to extend throughout the week.

Chester County Man Sentenced in Domestic Violence Case

WEST CHESTER, PA — Alberto Lopez, a former Chester County resident, was sentenced to six to 23 months in jail and five years of probation for a 2023 domestic violence incident involving his ex-girlfriend. The altercation began as a dispute over a cell phone but quickly escalated into a violent confrontation, during which Lopez assaulted the victim and brandished a handgun. The situation led to a tense standoff with police before Lopez was apprehended. During the sentencing, the judge rejected the defense’s attempts to minimize the event, pointing out the lasting trauma inflicted on the victim. Despite Lopez’s claims of remorse, the court noted that his comments and those of his supporters reflected ongoing victim-blaming. The sentence includes a no-contact order and highlights the serious approach the court takes toward domestic violence cases.

The following Chesco organizations are among the recipients:

• French & Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust, Glenmore
• Open Land Conservancy, Malvern and Berwyn

This year’s grants are the latest in the ongoing collaboration between Giant and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, which began in 2021. To date, the program has awarded over $1.2 million to projects addressing environmental protection, sustainable green space development, and food waste reduction.

Help Caln Township Spread Wildflower Seeds for Lawn-to-Meadow Conversion

CALN TWP — Caln Township’s ongoing effort to convert traditional lawns into thriving meadows continues with a community event on Saturday, October 12. The Parks and Recreation Department is asking residents to volunteer in the next phase of its lawn-to-meadow conversion project at Caln Meadow Park. The event begins at 3:00 PM, where participants will first gather at the township building to review photos of the existing meadow before heading outside to hand-seed a new one-acre area.

This initiative is part of a broader movement to enhance local ecosystems and promote sustainable land management practices. By introducing more native plants and wildflowers, the meadow supports pollinators, improves soil quality, and offers residents a scenic alternative to conventional turf grass. The event is open to all ages, and while gloves are recommended, no tools are necessary. Should weather conditions be unfavorable, the event will take place on Sunday, October 13. Register here
