Family of Murdered 12-Year-Old Sues Several Agencies and Coatesville School District

COATESVILLE, PA — The half-sisters of Malinda Hoagland, a young girl who died after enduring alleged prolonged abuse, have initiated legal action against several institutions, claiming they failed to act on warning signs. The lawsuits, filed in federal and state courts, name Chester County’s Department of Children, Youth & Families, the Coatesville Area School District, and a cyber charter school, alleging that their negligence contributed to Malinda’s death.

Malinda died in May 2024 after what investigators describe as months of severe abuse by her father and his girlfriend, who are now facing first-degree murder charges. The lawsuits allege that local authorities and school officials were aware of the risks but did not take sufficient steps to protect her, allowing the abuse to continue unchecked.

The legal actions seek compensatory and punitive damages and aim to push for systemic changes in how child protection cases are handled. The family’s attorneys argue that this case highlights widespread failures within institutions meant to safeguard children, urging reform to prevent future tragedies.

Man Rams Police Car in West Whiteland, Charges at Officers

EXTON, PA — A Chester County man is in custody after a dangerous confrontation with police in West Whiteland Township early Tuesday. Police were investigating a violation of a Protection From Abuse (PFA) order when they spotted the suspect in a red Honda Accord in the driveway of a residence on South Balderston Drive. As officers approached the scene, the man suddenly sped across the yard and crashed head-on into an unoccupied police vehicle, forcing officers to jump out of the way. After the crash, he exited his car and charged at the officers before being subdued and arrested. He is currently being held at Chester County Prison on charges that include aggravated assault and assaulting law enforcement officers. A preliminary hearing is set for August 23.

Chester County Secures Funding for Trail Expansion

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Chester County is set to expand its trail system thanks to newly allocated federal funding from the Carbon Reduction Program. The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission recently approved $120 million to advance the Circuit Trails, a regional network that will connect key corridors across southeastern Pennsylvania. The Chester Valley Trail is among the projects to benefit from this investment, receiving $6 million for the initial phase of a seven-mile extension.

County Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marian Moskowitz, and Eric Roe joined local advocates on a bike ride on August 10 to showcase the future expansion of the trail. The ride highlighted a 5.9-mile segment in Downingtown that will eventually link several communities and connect to the broader Schuylkill to Susquehanna Greenway.

Schwarber’s Grand Slam Powers Phillies to Comeback Win Over Marlins

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Philadelphia Phillies, facing growing pressure from a month-long slump, secured a 9-5 win over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night, led by a decisive grand slam from Kyle Schwarber. The victory was vital for the Phillies, who had lost four consecutive games and won just eight of 24 contests since the All-Star break.

After falling behind early, the Phillies rallied, with Schwarber’s seventh career grand slam in the fourth inning shifting the game in their favor. The win followed reports of a possible team meeting and saw manager Rob Thomson make notable lineup adjustments, including benching struggling All-Star shortstop Trea Turner. Turner’s recent struggles had been emblematic of the team’s difficulties, but the shakeup seemed to re-energize the lineup.

The Phillies’ bullpen held strong, with José Ruiz earning the win in relief. Additional runs from Alec Bohm and J.T. Realmuto helped seal the victory, offering a glimmer of hope that the team can turn things around as they head into the crucial stretch of the season.
