Chester County Flooding Displaces Dozens; State of Emergency Declared

AVONDALE, PA — Dozens of Chester County residents were displaced Thursday night after flooding from the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby inundated the Avondale neighborhood. The water rose rapidly, submerging homes and forcing evacuations. Emergency crews conducted rescues, and the American Red Cross set up temporary shelters including The Garage Community and Youth Center. This incident marks the second flooding event in two months for the area, leaving residents frustrated and considering relocation. In response, Governor Josh Shapiro declared a disaster emergency for 21 counties, including Chester, allowing for expedited resources and recovery efforts as the community begins to rebuild.

New Grant Boosts Chester County’s Initiatives to End Homelessness

WEST CHESTER, PA — An $800,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency will significantly bolster Chester County’s efforts to combat homelessness. The funding, provided through the PHARE program, will support critical initiatives, including the 211 Call Center, which acts as the main access point for housing crisis assistance, and the expansion of the Street Outreach Team. Since 2018, Chester County has received $3.1 million in PHARE funds, allowing the county to enhance its homelessness prevention strategies and make a lasting impact on the community. The PHARE program is supported by impact fees from natural gas drilling and realty transfer tax revenues, ensuring a stable financial base for these essential housing initiatives.

Fundraiser Launched for Pine Creek Park Playground Renovation

WEST PIKELAND, PA — The beloved playground at Pine Creek Park in Chester Springs, which has served local families for over 30 years, is set to be replaced with a modern, state-of-the-art facility. West Pikeland Township has initiated a fundraising effort to cover the $300,000 cost of the new playground, which will include features like an ADA-accessible swing set, a STEM activity table, and improved safety measures. While grants and donations have already contributed significantly, additional funds are needed to complete the project. The township is calling on the community to help close the funding gap, with construction scheduled to begin in the spring of 2025. All donations are tax-deductible and will be used solely for the playground's renovation and development. Info and donation link here
