Chester County Faces Major Power Outages After Intense Thunderstorms

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — A wave of severe thunderstorms struck Chester County on Tuesday, beginning around 3:30 p.m. The storms resulted in significant damage and left thousands without power, with peak outages reaching 71,000. By Wednesday morning, 52,000 customers remained without electricity, particularly in Caln, Coatesville, East Brandywine, New Garden, and West Caln.

PECO's emergency response crews, along with mutual assistance workers from various states, labored overnight to repair the damage and restore service. Although 80,000 customers in the broader service area had their power restored by mid-day Wednesday, many Chester County residents continued to cope with outages.

The National Weather Service confirmed that the damage was due to strong straight-line winds rather than tornadoes. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, major flooding, or significant fires, although the storms caused approximately 10 auto accidents and numerous road closures.

Potential Scam Thwarted at Senior Living Facility in East Caln Township

EAST CALN TWP — On Tuesday evening, a potential scam was foiled at Simpson Meadows Senior Living thanks to the alertness of a resident. Around 5:10 p.m., an adult male, claiming to represent PECO Energy or a competing electric provider, approached a resident, offering to reduce her electric bill. The resident, sensing something was wrong, informed the front desk, prompting the suspect to leave the building hastily.

The suspect was last seen on Plaza Drive, and a witness managed to take a photo of him before he disappeared from the area. This incident underscores the risks faced by vulnerable populations and the importance of vigilance in preventing fraud. Local authorities are calling for public assistance in identifying the suspect and are encouraging anyone with information to contact the Downingtown Police Department through their tip submission service.

Chester County Rangers Recognized for Dedication Amid Storm Clean-Up

WEST CHESTER, PA — Demonstrating their commitment to duty, Chester County park rangers Trzaska, Pavolic, and Conlin focused on storm clean-up efforts instead of attending a scheduled Commissioners Meeting to receive a World Ranger Day proclamation. Despite the conflicting obligations, Ranger Trzaska managed to join the meeting briefly via Zoom to accept the honor on behalf of the team.

The dedication of these rangers highlights their critical role in maintaining the county's parks, especially during severe weather conditions. The public is invited to acknowledge their efforts at a World Ranger Day program at Warwick Park on July 31 from 10 a.m. to noon.

“Up On the Roof” Fundraiser Returns to West Chester in September

The TFT® Firefighter Challenge Championship Series, a nonprofit organization, has organized this event for over 30 years to highlight firefighter skills and inspire future firefighters. Volunteers, including companies, civic groups, and churches, are essential for the event's success, assisting with competition tasks and resetting between races.
