Longwood Gardens' Century Plant to Bloom After 17 Years
KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, is currently attracting an influx of visitors due to the upcoming bloom of its Agave americana, known as the century plant. After 17 years of care, this rare event is finally happening. The plant, now nearly 25 feet tall, began to flower earlier this week. To accommodate its growth, gardeners altered the greenhouse roof. The century plant, which blooms once and then dies, is expected to reach full bloom within the next two to three weeks, depending on weather conditions. Visitors have a limited window to experience this botanical marvel before it completes its life cycle, though it will leave behind offspring for future generations to enjoy.
