Parents Charged in Drug-Related Death of 8-Year-Old in Chester County

COATESVILLE, PA — In a tragic case that highlights the severe consequences of drug-related crimes, Chester County authorities have charged the parents of 8-year-old Hunter Hawa with third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and other serious offenses following his drug-related death. Hunter died in July 2023 from a fatal combination of fentanyl, morphine, and cocaine, substances investigators say he accessed due to his parents' irresponsible behavior and drug use.

The mother, Holly Marie Back, has been arraigned and held on $1 million bail, while the father, Mousa Hawa, remains in custody on previous charges of drug delivery resulting in death. Hawa is already awaiting trial for his alleged role in the overdose death of a Phoenixville man.

The investigation by Chester County Detectives and Coatesville Police uncovered a history of drug use and neglect in the household, with the parents allegedly failing to secure dangerous substances from their child. Despite opportunities to remove Hunter from this hazardous environment, the parents continued their reckless behavior, ultimately leading to the child's death.
