Commemorating Christiana's Historic Stand: Descendant Luncheon to Honor Resistance Against Slavery

Lancaster Express, Traditional Transportation

CHRISTIANA โ€” The Christiana Historical Society has announced its annual Descendant Luncheon, slated for April 20, 2024, at the Christiana Masonic Lodge. This gathering serves as a poignant remembrance of the Resistance at Christiana in 1851, a significant event in the abolitionist movement. Descendants of individuals who played roles in this historic stand against slavery will convene to explore their family legacies and the enduring impact of their ancestors' actions.

On September 11, 1851, Christiana, nestled in southern Lancaster County, witnessed a momentous confrontation between a slave owner from Maryland and the local black community, supported by Quaker allies. This clash ultimately resulted in the slave owner's death and the subsequent arrest of thirty-eight individuals, both black and Quaker, on charges of treason. Notably, a legal team led by Congressman Thaddeus Stevens of Lancaster successfully defended the accused, securing their freedom.

The Descendant Luncheon provides a platform for reflection on this historic event, allowing participants to delve into their family histories and share any newfound insights gleaned from both personal and historical research. Moreover, it serves as a forum for discussing the transmission of this crucial narrative across generations.

In addition to the luncheon, the Christiana Historical Society will host a genealogy workshop on May 18, 2024, at the Moore Memorial Library. This workshop offers attendees the opportunity to delve deeper into their ancestral roots, with a focus on uncovering connections to the Resistance at Christiana. The event is open to all, and participation is encouraged, especially for those who suspect familial ties to the individuals involved.

For those interested in attending either event, registration and payment for the luncheon can be completed on the Christiana Historical Society website, while the workshop is offered free of charge. www.christianahistoricalsociety.com

Doula Services Integrated into Medicaid: Pennsylvania's Initiative for Maternal Health

LANCASTER โ€” In Pennsylvania, the Department of Human Services (DHS) and Department of Health (DOH) are prioritizing efforts to address maternal health disparities. Secretary Val Arkoosh of DHS and Acting Secretary Debra Bogen of DOH recently visited Patients R Waiting to discuss initiatives aimed at enhancing maternal healthcare within the Shapiro Administration.

Central to their agenda is the expansion of Medicaid coverage to include doula services. Doulas, revered for their guidance and support during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, have historically been underutilized, particularly among populations lacking adequate healthcare access.

The recent Medicaid expansion in Pennsylvania has paved the way for doulas to become certified providers, integrating them more seamlessly into women's care teams. This move is expected to uplift birth outcomes across the state, offering crucial support during a pivotal time for mothers and families.

Secretary Arkoosh emphasized the emotional and physical challenges of pregnancy and childbirth, highlighting the role of doulas in alleviating stress and improving outcomes for both mothers and newborns. Recognizing the significance of doulas in the continuum of care, the expansion of Medicaid access underscores a commitment to maternal health.
