Dining for a Cause: West Chester University's Second Annual Hunger Banquet Addresses World Hunger

West Chester University is set to host its second annual Hunger Banquet on March 7, offering an immersive experience to raise awareness about global hunger. Participants, including students, faculty, staff, and community members, will draw tickets determining their seating in areas representing high-, middle-, and low-income levels. The event seeks to deepen understanding of the causes and consequences of hunger, facilitating discussions on the realities faced by nearly 700 million people living on less than $2.15 per day, as reported by the World Bank.

Guided by a master of ceremonies, the interactive evening will provide a unique dining experience, prompting reflections on global survival challenges. Andrea Youndt, Chief Executive Officer of the Chester County Food Bank, will contribute insights into local food insecurity issues in one of Pennsylvania's wealthiest counties, Chester County.

Rita Patel Eng, Director of the Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact, emphasizes the banquet's role in fostering awareness and commitment to addressing extreme poverty. Proceeds from the Hunger Banquet will support West Chester University's Resource Pantry, which has been a vital resource since its establishment in 2016. Open to all registered undergraduate and graduate students, the pantry provides not only food but also toiletries, school supplies, and assistance in enrolling in government benefits.

With 2,903 student visits in the fall of 2023, the Resource Pantry continues to address significant needs on campus. To attend the Hunger Banquet and contribute to this cause, participants are encouraged to contribute: students, $5; faculty and staff, $10; members of the community, $25.

Chester County's Underground Railroad Icon, Cox House, Safely Relocated by Longwood Gardens

Longwood Gardens achieves a preservation milestone by successfully relocating the historic Cox House in Kennett Square, PA. Once a key station on the Underground Railroad, the house was moved 100 feet due to a Route 1 widening project by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Named after John and Hannah Cox, Quaker farmers and advocates of social justice, the house's relocation preserves a crucial piece of Chester County's history, showcasing the community's commitment to honoring the Underground Railroad's legacy.
