Immaculata University Honors Local Student with Saint Catherine Medal

Ava Thorley, a senior at Immaculata University from Downingtown, Pennsylvania, was awarded the prestigious Saint Catherine of Alexandria Medal for the 2023-2024 academic year. The medal, presented during the Mass of the Holy Spirit by University President Barbara Lettiere ’72, is sponsored by Kappa Gamma Pi and recognizes students who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service to the institution. Thorley, who majors in elementary and special education, expressed her gratitude for the honor and her faith's importance in her life. She has consistently made the dean's list, been a four-year member of the women's volleyball team, and is now preparing for student-teaching at St. Joseph School in Downingtown. Thorley was praised by Dr. Karen Miscavage, an associate professor of Education, for her qualities of wisdom, fortitude, and Christian service, which align with the values of the award.

Gray Water Source Uncovered In West Chester

Water

After a two-month investigation, the source of "gray water" contaminating a tributary of Taylor Run in West Chester has been traced to the Woolworth Building, owned by Barry Properties, which houses Iron Hill Brewery, D.P. Dough restaurant, and Windish offices. Dishwasher discharge from this building entered the stormwater system. The Public Works Director confirmed that the source was located and corrected at an approximate cost of $100,000. The borough aims to recover these costs and hold those responsible accountable. Cleanup efforts are ongoing, with no direct blame on the businesses involved. The Public Works Department worked diligently to resolve the issue, and the contamination may have started in 2021.
