Chester County's Housing Costs Are More Than Double What Experts Consider Affordable
WEST CHESTER, PA β Chester County's housing market remained sharply unaffordable in early 2026, with median home prices near $493,333 and total monthly ownership costs approaching $3,953. For residents earning the county's average wage, housing would consume roughly 65 percent of gross monthly income β more than double the widely accepted 28 percent affordability benchmark. National data from ATTOM shows the county is far from alone, with 97 percent of tracked markets remaining less affordable than historical norms.

From Carolina Wrens to Warblers: A Weekend of Birdwatching Opens at Hibernia Park

COATESVILLE, PA β Chester County Parks and Preservation is offering two guided birdwatching hikes at Hibernia County Park this weekend, led by Ranger Howard, as spring migration brings a wave of bird activity to the region. The first event, on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to noon, is tailored specifically for children. The second, on Sunday, April 19, from 8 to 10 a.m., is open to adult beginners. Both hikes are free and require registration through Chester County Parks and Preservation. Participants can expect to see migratory species passing through the area as well as year-round residents of the park, with Ranger Howard on hand to help identify birds and answer questions. No prior experience is necessary for either outing.
East Brandywine Youth Athletic Association Gives Community Park Fields a Fresh Start

EAST BRANDYWINE TWP β East Brandywine Community Park is entering the spring sports season with a fresh set of field improvements, all made possible by the East Brandywine Youth Athletic Association. The upgrades span three areas of the park: Field 6 has been converted into a new softball and baseball field; Field 5 received a temporary fence and improved turf; and Field D features a newly installed infield surface. The work represents a meaningful investment in the park's athletic infrastructure and is expected to benefit the many young players who use the facilities throughout the spring season. The township and park community have recognized EBYA for its efforts, with organizers expressing enthusiasm heading into what they hope will be a busy and successful season.
County Honors One of America's Oldest AME Congregations, and Its Forgotten Veterans

WEST CHESTER, PA β More than a century after the last of its members were laid to rest, the Westtown Shiloh AME Church and its forgotten cemetery are receiving long-overdue recognition. A public ceremony this Saturday, April 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Baptist Church in Westtown will mark the installation of a state historical marker acknowledging the congregation as one of the earliest African Methodist Episcopal churches in the United States.
Founded in 1817 as a racially integrated Methodist Episcopal church, the Westtown Shiloh congregation eventually became an AME institution after its white members relocated to West Chester. The original church building was later abandoned and torn down. The adjoining cemetery, which contains the graves of more than 100 congregation members β including Black veterans who served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War β became overgrown and effectively lost to public memory.
Saturday's event will bring together national AME representatives, local clergy, public officials, and descendants of those interred at the cemetery. A choir, musicians, and a color guard of Civil War reenactors will mark the occasion. The ceremony is free, open to the public, and includes refreshments. It is among the local events commemorating America 250, the national celebration of the country's 250th anniversary.
