Chester County's Homeless Count Drops 30 Percent, Reaching a Historic Low

WEST CHESTER, PA β€” Chester County, Pennsylvania, has achieved a significant milestone in its effort to address homelessness, reaching what advocates call "functional zero" for chronic homelessness β€” meaning the condition has been driven down to a rare, brief, and non-recurring level rather than a persistent community crisis.

The announcement, made at the county's annual housing and homelessness event, was backed by concrete data. The January 2026 Point-in-Time Count found 219 people experiencing homelessness, a 30 percent decrease from the prior year and the second-lowest total in more than a decade β€” far below the five-year average of 316 and the 10-year average of 431. Emergency shelter entries have dropped 52 percent over five years, and first-time homelessness fell another 10 percent in the past year alone.

County officials attribute the progress to a coordinated, countywide system that connects individuals to housing quickly and tracks outcomes through data. The effort has involved an unusually diverse range of partners: local borough governments, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, legal aid providers, housing developers, and domestic violence advocates. Community Solutions, which leads the national Built for Zero initiative, has recognized Chester County as a model for data-driven homelessness response.

Exton Man Arrested After Threatening Facebook Posts Target Broomall Church and School

Photo: Christopher Henderson

EXTON, PA β€” Marple Township police arrested Christopher M. Henderson, 38, of Exton after he allegedly made threatening posts on Facebook directed at St. Pius X Church on Lawrence Road in Broomall, Delaware County. Henderson faces a charge of making terroristic threats with intent to terrorize another.

After being notified of the posts, police identified Henderson as the source, took him into custody, and announced the arrest Tuesday morning. Officers maintained a visible presence at the church and its affiliated school through the end of the school day, and church officials sent an alert to parents of enrolled students. Police noted there was no ongoing threat to the broader public.

Caln Township Closes Barley Sheaf Road Bridge, Citing Worsening Structural Concerns

Image: Google Maps

CALN TWP β€” What began as a precautionary weight restriction on the North Barley Sheaf Road bridge over Valley Run in Caln Township has escalated into a full closure, after township engineers determined the structure's condition was declining and could no longer safely accommodate traffic.

Township officials initially restricted the bridge to vehicles under 15 tons following a routine inspection that identified structural concerns. However, as the bridge continued to deteriorate, engineers recommended closing it entirely until emergency repairs can be made. Caln Township has not yet announced a repair timeline or named a detour route, but pledged to keep residents informed as the situation develops.

Kimberton Whole Foods Opens Its Eighth Store, Bringing Organic Groceries to Eagleview

EAGLEVIEW, PA β€” Kimberton Whole Foods, the Chester County-founded natural and organic grocer, has expanded with its eighth location, opening in late April at the Eagleview Town Center in Uwchlan Township. The 10,500-square-foot store at 701 Rice Blvd. is the chain's largest Chester County location and sits at the base of a newly completed luxury apartment building, Claremont on the Square, making it an immediate amenity for new residents.

The new location also participates in Kimberton's Rounding Up at the Register charitable program. In its first full month, May, customer donations combined with the company's matching contribution sent $10,617 to the Chester County Food Bank. The program, now in its sixth year, has distributed more than $2.5 million to local nonprofits chainwide.
