West Chester Marks America's 250th With a Mural Rooted in Local History
WEST CHESTER, PA — To mark the nation's 250th anniversary, West Chester has commissioned a large-scale mural on West Gay Street — a 33-by-33-foot work painted by Downingtown artist Al Moretti alongside his sons Aaron and Reuben. Moretti, a visual artist and musician known for his energetic, color-layered style, was selected through a public call for artists after submitting a design and written proposal to the borough's Public Arts Commission.
The mural depicts three historical figures Moretti chose through extensive research: Col. John Hannum, a Revolutionary War fighter and borough founder; Hannah Freeman, representing the Lenni Lenape people; and Horace Pippin, the self-taught painter and World War I Harlem Hellfighter whose former home sits just down the block. A sweeping American flag and a bold "250" form the backdrop, with typography drawn from the Declaration of Independence.
The project was developed in partnership with Mayor Lillian DeBaptiste and the Public Arts Commission, and is partially funded by the Chester County Community Foundation's America 250 Grant.
Chester County Veterans Festival Offers Benefits Help, Community, and a Car Show

WEST CHESTER, PA — Veterans, their families, and caregivers in Chester County have a free resource day coming up this Saturday at West Chester University. The Coatesville VA Medical Center and Chester County Veterans Affairs are co-hosting the annual Summer VetFest at the Sykes Student Union Center, 110 West Rosedale Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — a rain-or-shine event open to all.
The festival brings together 45 information booths from VA departments and community organizations, covering topics that include VA benefits eligibility, health care enrollment, veterans service organizations, education opportunities, job placement, homeless outreach, women veteran support, and justice system resources. A car show runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and children's activities — face painting, balloon art, and games — are available throughout the day. Lunch boxes will be offered while supplies last.
Downingtown Recognizes Code Staff Member for Earning Borough Official Certification

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Downingtown Borough is marking a staffing milestone after Susan Gregg, a code administrative assistant, earned the Certified Borough Official designation — a credential granted by the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs to municipal employees who demonstrate a commitment to professional development and continuing education in local government.
The CBO program is structured around leadership, operational excellence, and expanding the practical knowledge that underpins effective municipal service. Earning the designation requires sustained coursework and is recognized across Pennsylvania as a mark of professional investment in public service.
$1.9 Million Wall Repair Will Shut Down Bondsville Road Through Thanksgiving
CALN TWP — Drivers in East Brandywine and Caln townships are facing a significant disruption beginning June 22, when PennDOT closes Bondsville Road between Fisherville Road and Bailey Road for a full retaining wall replacement near Beaver Creek. The closure will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is not expected to lift until November 24 — a span of more than five months.
The $1.9 million project involves replacing a deteriorating retaining wall along approximately 140 feet of roadway, stabilizing the embankment, reconstructing around 400 feet of road and shoulders, installing guiderail, and making broader pavement improvements. Local access will be maintained for residents along the affected stretch.
