Virtual Event Discusses the Legacy of Trailblazing Astrophysicist Charlotte Moore Sitterly

WEST CHESTER, PA — A Chester County native who helped reshape humanity's understanding of the stars will be celebrated in a virtual program hosted by Chester County Archives and Records Services on Thursday, March 12 at noon.
Charlotte Moore Sitterly, born in 1898 in East Fallowfield Township, built a towering scientific career centered on the classification of stars through spectral analysis and the discovery of the element technetium in sunlight. In 1949, she made history as the first woman elected a foreign associate of Britain's Royal Astronomical Society — a milestone that reflected both her extraordinary contributions and the obstacles she had surmounted throughout her career.
The program will include a presentation by Jacob Nibauer, a doctoral candidate in astrophysics at Princeton University, who will discuss the enduring relevance of Sitterly's work in contemporary astronomy. Admission is pay-as-you-wish, with all proceeds benefiting the History Center's preservation efforts and future programming. The event will be recorded and shared with registered attendees. The second is set for Sunday, April 6 at 8:30 a.m., gathering at the Spark Hotel at 700 W. Uwchlan Avenue.
