COATESVILLE, PA — About 200 people gathered on Reeceville Road in West Brandywine Township on Wednesday afternoon as the Coatesville Area School District broke ground on the new North Brandywine Middle School. Students, cheerleaders, the school chorus, board members and district leaders took part in the ceremony.

The $88 million, 138,000-square-foot school for grades six through eight will sit on 46.2 acres at the former Friendship Elementary School site. It will include about 50 classrooms, a TV studio, a library and media center, a gymnasium, a fitness center, a stage, a dining commons and 340 parking spaces. The school is expected to open in fall 2028. New athletic fields will follow within a year, and the current middle school will be torn down, apart from a newer wing that will stay.

District leaders, including Superintendent Anthony P. Rybarczyk and board president Lyryn Yacoe, described the project as a long-term investment in students and the community. A longtime science teacher reflected on how much classroom technology has changed during her two decades at the school.

WEST CALN TWP — Cindy Warren, a West Caln Township woman charged in the 2024 death of her 12-year-old stepdaughter, returned to court on Monday as her case moves toward trial. Prosecutors and her defense team submitted evidence, including a jury questionnaire, which are routine steps before trial that point to a lengthy proceeding ahead.

Investigators say Ms. Warren and her boyfriend, Rendell Hoagland, abused his daughter, Malinda, for years. According to the authorities, the girl died of starvation and blunt-force trauma in May 2024. Ms. Warren faces hundreds of charges, including first-degree murder, and remains jailed.

Mr. Hoagland pleaded guilty in January to first-degree murder, conspiracy, kidnapping and related charges as part of a plea agreement. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole, plus 30 to 60 years.

MALVERN, PA — The Paoli Battlefield in Malvern will host its annual Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at First and Wayne Avenues. Tickets are $10 per person or $20 for a family of up to four.

Reenactors from Historical Military Impressions will present a timeline of American military history, showing how soldiers from different eras dressed and what they carried. Mike Kochan, who has built Franklin replicas for Philadelphia museums, will demonstrate Benjamin Franklin's experiments. Noah Lewis will portray Ned Hector, a Black Continental Army bombardier who fought at the Battle of Brandywine. Other historical sites and the USO will also take part.

The Philadelphia Eagles' performance bald eagle will appear from noon to 1 p.m., and a Batmobile will be on display throughout the day, along with food trucks and vendors. The event ends with a ceremony at the gravesite of the 52 soldiers killed at Paoli, featuring a wreath-laying, a firing salute, bagpipes and taps.

ELVERSON, PA — Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site will hold Living History Day on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 2 Mark Bird Lane in Elverson. Admission is free.

Staff and volunteers in period dress will demonstrate the skills that sustained the community around the furnace, including spinning, blacksmithing, open-hearth cooking, candle making, dyeing, quilting, letter writing and baking in the site's historic oven. Visitors can try some activities themselves, meet the newest animals in the site's flock and watch an aluminum molding and casting demonstration tied to the site's industrial past.
