Downingtown's Good Neighbor Day Brings Morning Race, Evening Fireworks

DOWNINGTOWN, PA β€” Downingtown residents should expect a day of rolling traffic disruptions as the borough celebrates its America250 edition of Good Neighbor Day on the Fourth of July. The day begins with a morning closure of major routes, including Business Route 30 and Pennsylvania Avenue, to accommodate the "Run for Life" race starting at 8 a.m. Officials recommend using the Route 30 Bypass or Route 100 to bypass downtown entirely during this window.

East Pennsylvania Avenue will remain closed for much of the day, and delays are expected to persist into the evening. The most substantial restrictions take effect at dusk, when Viaduct Avenue and Bradford Avenue close to all vehicle traffic starting at 6:30 p.m., sealing off the Johnsontown neighborhood until public safety officials clear the roads to reopen following the fireworks display.

Kerr Park continues to serve as the borough's sole designated public viewing area, with officials reiterating that no parking or viewing access will be available near the launch site or within Johnsontown itself. New this year, attendees are being asked to adjust their seating direction slightly at Kerr Park, a small accommodation intended to protect a population of eagles nesting near the display site. Residents can find complete details on the Good Neighbor Day website.

A New Mural Arrives in Kerr Park, Just in Time for the Fourth

DOWNINGTOWN, PA β€” Ahead of Independence Day, Downingtown celebrated the completion of a new mural in Kerr Park, unveiled just in time for the borough's America250 edition of Good Neighbor Day. Artist Mark Anthony put the finishing touches on the piece this week, a project brought to life through a collaboration between the Chester County Mural and Arts Project and Downingtown Parks and Recreation.

Borough officials highlighted the mural as part of a broader push to bring public art into everyday spaces around town, pointing to the streetside planters and park murals that have increasingly become part of Downingtown's identity. The timing carries extra meaning this year, since Kerr Park also serves as the town's official viewing spot for the evening fireworks show.

PA Invites Anglers to Fish Free This Independence Day

DOWNINGTOWN, PA β€” The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is inviting anglers of all kinds to take advantage of Fish-for-Free Day this Saturday, July 4th, when both residents and non-residents may fish in the state's waterways without needing a license or permit. The holiday exemption is a yearly tradition meant to make fishing more accessible for a day, though officials emphasized that all standard regulations β€” including limits on catch size and quantity β€” remain in effect. Those interested in participating are advised to check the commission's current fishing regulations ahead of time to ensure compliance while enjoying the holiday on the water.

County Health Officials Extend Extreme Heat Warning

WEST CHESTER, PA β€” The Chester County Health Department has extended its Extreme Heat Health Alert through Sunday, July 5th, citing continued dangerous heat forecast by the National Weather Service's Philadelphia/Mount Holly office. While the region will see a slight drop in temperatures on Sunday, officials caution that heat-related health risks will remain elevated through the end of the weekend. Residents are encouraged to consult the county's online heat safety resources for guidance on protecting themselves and vulnerable family members, and to remain cautious even as conditions begin to ease.

Caln Township Reminds Residents of Fireworks Rules For the Fourth

CALN TWP β€” Caln Township is reminding residents ahead of the Fourth of July that Pennsylvania law restricts where and how consumer fireworks can be used, including bans on use near occupied buildings or while impaired. Officials are also urging basic safety precautions, such as keeping water nearby and properly disposing of used fireworks.
