Downingtown East Football Camp Under Scrutiny After Alcohol Incident

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Downingtown Area School District is investigating after several high school volunteers admitted to drinking alcohol on campus during the district's Blue & Gold Summer Football Camp on June 18. The students and a supervising adult volunteer, who is not a district employee, were removed from the camp. While families of camp attendees were notified directly, other parents say they found out through social media and are calling for greater transparency. The district has not released specific disciplinary details, citing student privacy.

PASSHE Announces Plan to Cover Remaining Tuition for Pell and State Grant Recipients

HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) announced the "PASSHE Pledge," a new initiative that will eliminate remaining tuition costs for eligible in-state students receiving both Pell Grants and PA State Grants, starting in fall 2027. The program covers all 10 PASSHE universities but excludes fees, housing and meals. Separately, the Board of Governors set 2026-27 tuition at $4,169 per semester — a $172 increase — while pledging to roll back the rate if the state provides additional funding in its ongoing budget negotiations.

Downingtown Borough Manager Steps Down After Five Years

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — After five years leading Downingtown's municipal operations, Jeffrey A. Smith is departing his role as Borough Manager, bringing to a close a chapter in a local government career that spans more than three decades across communities in Pennsylvania and Florida. During his tenure in Downingtown, Smith helped guide the borough through numerous projects and challenges, with officials pointing to his deep institutional knowledge as a key resource for the Borough Council, staff and residents alike.

Corinne Badman has assumed the role of Interim Borough Manager, taking responsibility for the borough's day-to-day operations as officials manage the leadership transition. Borough leaders thanked Smith for his years of service and said his presence at Borough Hall would be missed, while wishing him success in this next stage of his career.

Police Seek Public's Help After String of Vehicle Thefts in East Brandywine

EAST BRANDYWINE TWP — The East Brandywine Township Police Department is asking for the public's help after a string of thefts from unlocked vehicles struck the Hideaway Farms neighborhood overnight between July 9 and July 10. Investigators are encouraging residents in the area to review any home surveillance or doorbell camera footage from that time frame for suspicious people or vehicles that might help identify those responsible.

Anyone with relevant information or footage — even seemingly minor details — has been asked to reach out to Detective Brendan Flood, who is leading the investigation. As the case continues, police are also using the moment to remind residents of basic vehicle safety, urging them to keep car doors locked and to avoid leaving valuables inside unattended, a simple step that can help prevent similar incidents in the future.
