EXTON, PA — The Chester County Food Bank has launched a month-long food collection challenge with a goal of gathering 17,000 pounds of food, a figure chosen to honor the organization's 17th anniversary. The effort coincides with Hunger Action Month, observed each September by food banks nationwide.

All donations support the food bank's work providing groceries to Chester County residents facing food insecurity. Residents can bring contributions to the organization's Exton office, located at 650 Pennsylvania Drive, at any point during September.

The food bank is also pointing residents toward two other forms of support: volunteering and advocacy. The campaign runs through Sept. 30.

THORNDALE, PA — Sheetz's first Chester County location has blown past its own Sept. 1 target, and the municipal record shows no replacement date for construction or opening. The project would demolish the former Rite Aid at 3807 E. Lincoln Highway in Caln Township and build a 6,139-square-foot convenience store with six fueling positions, 43 parking spaces and two mobile-order drive-through windows — a scaled-back version of an earlier plan that included twelve fueling positions.

Township commissioners granted conditional-use approval 5-0 on May 14 with 14 attached conditions, but that vote did not authorize construction. Sheetz must still complete land-development review, which has been ongoing since June, with revised preliminary plans presented in June and again on Aug. 18.

Traffic and pedestrian safety have dominated the review. The site sits diagonally across from a Wawa at an intersection where officials have cited a recent serious crash and an earlier fatality, and the township has invoked its Vision Zero initiative. Conditions require crosswalk protections and restrict the Lincoln Highway driveway to right-in/right-out movements — a requirement Sheetz has partly contested, arguing PennDOT holds authority over the highway. Proposed flashing yellow left-turn signals likewise need state approval and possibly easement acquisitions. A post-development traffic study would be required within six months of occupancy.

COATESVILLE, PA — An evening bird walk at Hibernia County Park will bring Ranger Howard together with the Valley Forge Audubon Society on Sunday, Sept. 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The two-hour program will follow the less-traveled side of the park rather than its more heavily used recreation areas.

Chester County Parks and Preservation has framed the outing as family-friendly and open to all ages and ability levels, with beginners explicitly encouraged to attend. The timing coincides with the tail end of fall migration in southeastern Pennsylvania, when evening hours often bring increased activity.

The walk is one of a slate of seasonal programs run through the county parks system. Information and registration are available at chesco.org/parkprograms.

UWCHLAN TWP — Uwchlan Township has scheduled a Dumpster Day for Saturday, Oct. 3, from 8 a.m. to noon along Sheree Boulevard, working with Whitetail Disposal and eForce Recycling. The event allows residents to dispose of bulk household goods and electronic waste in a single trip.

The format is drive-up. Residents remain in their vehicles while staff unload items. Vehicles will enter via Route 113 and exit onto Route 100. Participation is restricted to township residents who use the municipal trash service, and proof of address will be checked on site. Because volume is expected, the township is asking residents to sign up for a time slot ahead of the event through eForce's Eventbrite registration page.

Accepted items include furniture, mattresses and box springs, appliances that do not contain freon, computers, televisions, gaming consoles, and small electronics and appliances. Not accepted: hazardous waste, freon-containing items, construction materials, car batteries, tires, and ammunition or explosives.
