Chester County Explosives Manufacturer Consumed by Major Fire

ATGLEN, PA — A fire broke out early Tuesday at Action Manufacturing Company, an explosives facility in Atglen, Pennsylvania. Firefighters arrived after 3 a.m. to find the building in flames and decided to let it burn in a controlled manner due to hazardous materials inside. Authorities closed nearby roads but said there was no threat to the public. The company manufactures timing devices for munitions and explosive powders. Action Manufacturing previously pleaded guilty in 2014 to illegally storing hazardous waste and paid a $1.2 million fine. State and federal agencies are investigating.

Northern Lights Spotted in Downingtown Skies, Encore Expected

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — The Northern Lights appeared over Pennsylvania and New Jersey on Tuesday night, including in Downingtown, offering a rare celestial display for mid-Atlantic residents. The aurora was caused by two coronal mass ejections from the sun that merged near Earth's magnetic field, creating what scientists call a Cannibal CME. Meteorologists say Tuesday's showing could be just a preview, with an even more vibrant and widespread aurora expected Wednesday night. Residents are being encouraged to prepare their cameras for what could be a dramatic natural light show extending farther south than usual.
