Brenda's Vac Shop Consolidates to Thorndale Location After West Chester Closure

CALN TWP — After more than two decades on West Chester's Market Street, Brenda's Vac Shop is consolidating to a single Thorndale location, ensuring continued vacuum repair services for the local area while simplifying operations for its veteran owner.

Brenda K. Powell will closed her shop on Friday, after losing the lease on the small Market Street space she has occupied since 2004. All business will move to her existing location at 51 N. Bailey Road in Thorndale, where repair work has always been performed.

While the West Chester closure was not Powell's choice, she considers the consolidation beneficial. The change eliminates the need to shuttle between two locations and staff the West Chester shop, which primarily served as a customer drop-off point. Powell can now focus entirely on the Thorndale facility where repairs take place.

Powell brings 43 years of experience to the increasingly specialized field of vacuum repair. Before opening her own business, she worked for 17 years at Charlie McCardle's vacuum shop on Market Street, an establishment that dated to 1937. A Coatesville Area High School graduate who made history as her school's first female wood shop student in 1971, Powell has long enjoyed hands-on mechanical work.

The Thorndale shop repairs all vacuum makes and models while selling new and refurbished equipment. Powell emphasizes keeping machines out of landfills through proper maintenance and honest assessments of whether repairs make economic sense. She recommends biannual servicing at $39.95 plus parts, which includes complete teardown, cleaning, bearing lubrication, filter replacement and belt changes.
