Downingtown to Receive $160,000 for Traffic Safety Improvements

DOWNINGTOWN, PA β The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has awarded Downingtown Borough two grants totaling $160,000 for traffic safety improvements as part of a $27 million statewide funding distribution.
The larger grant of nearly $95,000 will enhance the existing midblock pedestrian crossing along Pennsylvania Avenue at Kerr Park, while a second grant of approximately $65,000 will fund lane configuration and detection system upgrades at the intersection of Wallace Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue, plus detection improvements at two adjacent intersections within the borough.
The funding comes through the state's Automated Red-Light Enforcement program, which uses revenue from red-light violation fines collected in Philadelphia to support traffic safety projects across Pennsylvania. Since 2023, the program has invested more than $60 million in 121 safety projects statewide.
Residents Invited to Join Great Backyard Bird Count This Weekend

WEST BRADFORD TWP β West Bradford Township residents can join the Great Backyard Bird Count from February 13 to 16 by observing and recording birds from any location. The four-day global event, organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada, helps scientists track bird populations before annual migrations. Details are available at birdcount.org.
PennDOT to Close Section of U.S. 202 for Long-Term Sinkhole Solution
KING OF PRUSSIA, PA β A nine-month closure of U.S. 202 South in Upper Merion Township will begin February 23 as Pennsylvania transportation officials launch the second phase of a major project to address chronic sinkhole problems on the corridor.
The $22.4 million project will close southbound U.S. 202, also known as DeKalb Pike, around the clock between Prince Frederick Boulevard and Saulin Boulevard and Henderson Road through late fall. The work is part of a broader effort to solve recurring sinkhole issues that have forced repeated emergency repairs and traffic disruptions along the heavily traveled Montgomery County roadway.
During construction, southbound traffic will be detoured using Saulin Boulevard and Henderson Road, though local access to homes and businesses will be maintained. The project also includes improvements extending to Route 29 in East Whiteland Township, Chester County.
West Chester University Brings Science Talks to Bar Setting

WEST CHESTER, PA β WCU is offering its Science on Tap series again this semester, providing free monthly presentations by faculty experts in a casual restaurant setting designed to make scientific research accessible to the broader community.
The talks take place on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. on the second floor of Barnaby's Restaurant on South High Street in West Chester. Each session features a different university researcher discussing current work, new discoveries, and scientific concepts, with opportunities for audience questions and discussion. Attendees can order from the restaurant menu during presentations.
The Science on Tap series is directed by Christopher Roemmele, an associate professor in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences. He said the program aims to bring research out of academic settings and share it with the public, promoting science literacy and showcasing faculty work beyond teaching.
