DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Ronit Luthra, an 11th grader at Downingtown High School East, has won the upper-grade division of Senator Dave McCormick's statewide America250 Pennsylvania Youth Essay Contest, which marks the nation's 250th anniversary. The contest drew dozens of entries from Pennsylvania high school students, who were asked to reflect on the state's role in American history.

Mr. Luthra's winning essay focused on George Westinghouse, the Pittsburgh industrialist whose support for alternating current helped electrify the modern world. He argued that Westinghouse is underappreciated, and that his rise from modest beginnings, along with his backing of an overlooked immigrant inventor, reflects the opportunity America offers.

Brady Sirochman, a sophomore at Laurel Highlands High School in Uniontown, won the ninth- and 10th-grade division with an essay on Gen. George C. Marshall's military and diplomatic legacy.

Entries were reviewed anonymously by the senator, a history teacher and staff members. Both winning essays were entered into the Congressional Record, and both students met Senator McCormick in Washington, where they received flags flown over the Capitol on Independence Day. Runners-up received signed letters of recognition.

KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Longwood Gardens will debut "Symphony of Horror," a new Halloween production, on Friday, Oct. 23. The evening begins with clips from "Nosferatu," the 1922 silent vampire film, projected onto the gardens' fountains, followed by a second act of live music set to ominous imagery and choreographed fountain effects.

Principal organist Peter Richard Conte will perform throughout, with a program that includes "Night on Bald Mountain," "Funeral March of a Marionette," "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and Bach's Toccata in D Minor.

The show starts at 8:15 p.m. and is included with timed admission, which runs $22 to $38, with entry slots every half-hour from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. SNAP/EBT cardholders pay $8, up to four tickets per card, with a state-issued ID. Longwood's chrysanthemum festival, featuring more than 5,000 blooms, opens Oct. 16. The gardens are at 1001 Longwood Road in Kennett Square.

CALN TWP — The Caln Township Clean-Up Crew, organized by the township's Parks and Recreation department, will hold its next litter pickup on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon around the Embreeville Road Triangle.

The program hosts targeted cleanups year-round and rewards repeat participants with merchandise: a sticker for the first event, a car magnet for the third, a hat for the sixth, a water bottle for the ninth and a hoodie for the 12th. Registration is available through SignUpGenius

WEST CHESTER, PA — A fall pumpkin decorating contest aims to highlight Chester County's local farms and orchards. To enter, residents share a photo of a decorated or carved pumpkin purchased from a local grower.

The prize package includes two tickets to Longwood Gardens, two tickets to the Chadds Ford Historical Society's Great Pumpkin Carve, two tickets to Chaddsford Winery's Adult Trick or Treat and a $25 American Express gift card.
