DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Yohaan Damani of Downingtown Middle School claimed the top spot at the 2026 Chester County Spelling Bee, held Feb. 11 at the Collegium Performing Arts Center, by correctly spelling the word "predecessor." His first-place finish earns him the opportunity to represent Chester County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., this spring.

Forty-one students competed in this year's event, each having already won their school's individual spelling bee to qualify. Together, they worked through more than 135 words across the competition's rounds. Santosh Kandasamy of G.A. Stetson Middle School finished as runner-up, while Brooke Bainbridge of Lionville Middle School and Cadel McBee of Saints Simon and Jude School tied for third place.

Caln Township to Open Exhibit on Carver Court Housing Development

CALN TWP — A new exhibit celebrating the history of Carver Court will open on Feb. 24 at the Caln Township Municipal Building in Thorndale, hosted by Caln Township and the Old Caln Historical Society as part of Black History Month.

Carver Court was established during World War II as a government-funded housing project for Black steel workers who were essential to wartime industry but excluded from integrated housing by the segregationist policies of the time. Out of those circumstances, residents built a community defined by strong bonds and a shared sense of belonging.

Decades later, that history received formal recognition when Carver Court was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. Caln Township Commissioner Jane Kennedy played a significant role in that achievement through her dedicated research and advocacy.

The exhibit opening runs from 5 to 7 p.m. and is free to attend. Organizers are asking attendees to RSVP in advance to assist with event planning.

Coatesville to Honor Bloody Sunday With March and Civic Program on March 7

COATESVILLE, PA — On March 7, Coatesville will mark the 61st anniversary of Bloody Sunday — the day in 1965 when civil rights marchers were violently attacked on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala. — with a community march and civic program designed to connect that history to present-day participation.

The event, "From the Bridge to the Ballot 2026," is organized by the Together We Stand Project and will begin with participants gathering at Gateway Park at 8:30 a.m. The march, which starts at 9 a.m., will follow a symbolic route along Route 30 from 1st Avenue to 5th Avenue. Last year's march attracted more than 500 community members, underscoring the event's growing resonance in the region.

Chester County DAR Recognizes Student Essays Exploring the Roots of American Independence

WEST CHESTER, PA — Two West Chester students have been recognized by the Chester County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for their essays on American Revolutionary history. Sarah Hixson, an eighth grader at E.N. Peirce Middle School, won the American History Essay Contest, while Grace Rongaus, a junior at B. Reed Henderson High School, claimed top honors in the Patriots of the American Revolution contest.

The students were honored at the chapter's February meeting, where they received medals, monetary awards, and certificates presented by Michael Hartman, chief of staff for State Senator Carolyn Comitta, on behalf of the Pennsylvania State Senate. Each student also read her essay aloud to the assembled DAR members and guests.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is a nonprofit, nonpolitical organization whose members trace their lineage to patriots of the American Revolution. The organization promotes patriotism, education, and historic preservation.
