Dangerous Heat Prompts County Health Alert, Cooling Centers Open

WEST CHESTER, PA — In response to a National Weather Service forecast predicting extremely dangerous temperatures and heat index levels, the Chester County Health Department has issued an Extreme Heat Health Alert effective July 15 through July 16, with the possibility of an extension if conditions deteriorate further. To help residents cope with the heat, cooling centers have opened across the county; those seeking shelter are advised to verify hours beforehand by visiting the facility's website or calling, as schedules can change. Residents in need of broader assistance, including housing, utility, or mental health support, can contact the Chester County Human Needs Network by calling 211 or texting their zip code to 898-211. The county is also promoting ReadyChesco, its official emergency notification system, which allows residents to sign up for alerts via email, text, or phone, with a specific recommendation to enable Public Health notifications. Additional heat-safety guidance is available on the county's website.

Downingtown Scouts Install Lending Library Along Struble Trail

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Chester County Parks + Preservation has recognized the efforts of two Downingtown-based Scouting groups, Cub Scout Pack 2 and BSA Troop 2, for completing a community project along Struble Trail. The Scouts installed a new lending library at the trail's Norwood Road access point, giving visitors an opportunity to borrow, share, and exchange books while using the trail. County officials praised the initiative as a valuable addition to the popular recreational corridor, highlighting the contribution local youth organizations continue to make to the county's parks and trail system.

Footgolf Challenge Coming to Ingleside Golf Club to Benefit Local Youth

CALN TWP — The Coatesville Youth Initiative is set to host a Footgolf Challenge on July 29 at Ingleside Golf Club, combining the mechanics of soccer with the structure of a golf course. Participants kick a soccer ball toward large-format holes instead of using standard clubs and balls, creating a hybrid sport suited for players of all experience levels. The event, announced by Caln Township, is open to individual entrants as well as four-member teams, and all proceeds will go directly toward supporting the Coatesville Youth Initiative's mission. Community members interested in participating or becoming a sponsor are encouraged to reach out to David, the organization's development director, at 610-380-0200 ext. 202.

"Think Before You Click": Pennsylvania Launches Senior Scam-Prevention Workshop

HARRISBURG, PA — Amid growing concern over financial fraud targeting older adults, Pennsylvania's Office of Homeland Security and Attorney General's Office are hosting a free virtual workshop on September 9 called "Protecting Seniors Online: Think Before You Click." The three-hour session, running from 1 to 4 p.m., will address the rise of impersonation scams, phishing emails, and other tactics used to steal seniors' personal and financial information. A panel of speakers will include Attorney General Dave Sunday, David Shallcross of the Elder Abuse Unit, Mary Bach of AARP Pennsylvania's Consumer Issues Task Force, Rick Cimakasky of the Pennsylvania Bankers Association and Penn Community Bank, and representatives from the Pennsylvania State Police.
