The Wild World of the Van Gogh Truthers

In 1990, after years of practicing medicine and reviewing Van Gogh’s case history via his hundreds of letters, Arenberg published a paper in JAMA diagnosing Van Gogh as suffering not from epilepsy, as the artist’s physician claimed a century earlier, but from MΓ©niΓ¨re’s disease, an inner-ear affliction that can cause vertigo, of which Van Gogh complained, and tinnitus, a persistent ringing in the ears. MΓ©niΓ¨re’s, to Arenberg, could better explain Van Gogh’s decision to slice off his ear. After retiring, in 2017, Arenberg recommitted himself to studying Van Gogh and became convinced that art historians had made an even more alarming mistake: Van Gogh had not committed suicide. He’d been murdered.

Chester County Braces for Dangerous Heat With Countywide Alert

WEST CHESTER, PA β€” The Chester County Health Department has declared an Extreme Heat Health Alert in response to a National Weather Service forecast warning of dangerously high temperatures and heat index values. The alert runs from Wednesday, July 1, through Saturday, July 4, 2026, and may be extended if conditions worsen.

To help residents cope with the heat, cooling centers are open throughout the county; a full list is available online, though officials recommend calling ahead since hours can change. Residents seeking broader assistance β€” including emergency shelter, housing support, or mental health services β€” can contact the Chester County Human Needs Network by calling 211 or texting their zip code to 898-211. Seniors can also reach the county's Department of Aging directly for help.

The county also highlighted other public places where residents can cool off, including libraries, senior centers, and public pools and splash pads across the region. Officials emphasized that extreme heat is one of the deadliest weather hazards, causing more fatalities nationally than many other natural disasters, and encouraged residents to take the alert seriously. More safety information is available at chesco.org/heat.

County Urges Caution as Mowing Crews Hit Chester Valley Trail

EXTON, PA β€” County officials are alerting trail users to ongoing maintenance work along the Chester Valley Trail, where Facilities staff will be performing edge mowing over the next couple of weeks. Cyclists, runners, and walkers are urged to slow down and wait for a safe opportunity to pass whenever they come across crews operating mowing equipment on the trail.

Once work on the Chester Valley Trail is complete, maintenance crews will shift their attention to the Struble Trail, followed by the county-managed portion of the Schuylkill River Trail, as part of the county's broader seasonal upkeep of its trail system.

Eight Chester County Chambers to Host Summer Speed Networking Luncheon

MALVERN, PA β€” The Downingtown Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the return of its Multi-Chamber Summer Speed Networking Luncheon, set for Tuesday, July 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The members-only event will bring together participants from all eight chambers of commerce in Chester County, offering attendees the opportunity to network with hundreds of professionals from throughout the region.

In addition to networking, the event will support the Chester County Food Bank, with organizers asking attendees to bring canned food donations. Because space is limited β€” and the luncheon has sold out for four consecutive years β€” organizers are encouraging early registration, with a deadline of July 6. A waitlist will open once available spots are filled.

Chester County Welcome Center Unveils Revolutionary War Exhibit for America250

WEST CHESTER, PA β€” The Chester County Welcome Center in West Chester has opened a new exhibit, "Forged in Freedom," as part of the county's participation in the America250 anniversary celebrations. On display through September, the exhibit features six panels from the Chester County Archives covering the region's Revolutionary War history, along with topics such as local industry, abolition, and the county's natural and cultural landmarks.

Visitors can view a half-scale replica cannon and cannonball, walk across a large floor map depicting the Battle of Brandywine and other key Revolutionary sites, and explore wall displays featuring local author Bruce Mowday's writing alongside artwork by Karl J. Kuerner. Children's activities include a scavenger hunt, a Lincoln Logs cabin-building station, and an educational booklet with puzzles and history lessons compiled by Welcome Center staff.

The exhibit also includes a handmade replica of Revolutionary-era women's clothing and a short video on the county's role in the war. Officials say additional items, including a commemorative quilt and artifacts from the Brandywine Battlefield State Park collection, will be added in the coming months.
