County Commissioners Issue Proclamations for Black History Month's Dual Anniversaries

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County marked two milestones in Black history observance this February, as county commissioners presented formal proclamations recognizing the 100th anniversary of Negro History Week and the 50th anniversary of President Gerald Ford's official designation of Black History Month in 1976. The ceremony brought together representatives from several community organizations, including the Chester County NAACP's Coatesville chapter, Black Light Projects, and Mt. Zion AME Church. Commissioner Marian Moskowitz was among the officials presiding over the event.

A New Federal Status Gives Economic Development Council Room to Grow

WEST CHESTER, PA — Pennsylvania's Department of Community and Economic Development has awarded Chester County more than $13 million through two funding programs. Transportation grants totaling nearly $6.1 million will support 13 projects, including bridge and intersection work in Caln and East Caln townships. A separate water and sewer program contributed another $7.2 million across 26 projects, with funds going to Coatesville and Uwchlan Township, among others.

West Bradford Residents Can Load Up on Mulch Starting Late March

WEST BRADFORD TWP — This spring, West Bradford Township is making it easier for residents to haul away mulch with the help of a front-end loader at the township's compost facility. The service runs from March 28 through June 13, available each Wednesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. — the same hours the compost site operates year-round.

The facility serves residents of both West Bradford and East Bradford Townships and accepts a range of yard and recyclable materials, including leaves, brush, yard waste, scrap metal, and wooden pallets. There are, however, firm restrictions on what can be dropped off. Stumps, roots, rocks, bricks, pavers, food scraps, dirt, and pressure-treated lumber are all turned away. Any branches brought to the site must measure no more than 10 inches in diameter and eight feet in length. Only biodegradable bags are accepted — no plastic. Scrap metal is welcome at no cost, provided it does not contain freon.

Styer Road Near PA Turnpike Overpass to Close for Up to a Month Starting March 9

UPPER UWCHLAN TWP — Drivers traveling along Styer Road in Upper Uwchlan Township should expect a significant detour beginning March 9, when a full 24/7 road closure takes effect near the Pennsylvania Turnpike overpass. The shutdown, which is projected to last three to four weeks, is being carried out by contractors working on behalf of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.

The affected segment runs between Meadow Creek Lane — the stretch nearest the turnpike — and Morning Light Road. During the closure, crews will install a high-strength fiber wrap along the bridge structure and paint its underside, standard maintenance procedures used to extend the lifespan of highway overpasses.
