Chester County Commissioners Honor 4-H Week With Formal Proclamation

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County marked Pennsylvania 4-H Week with an official proclamation from the county commissioners, presented to Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding and representatives of the Tri-Community Dairy Club. The ceremony highlighted the depth and reach of the county's 4-H program, which enrolls 355 young participants in 32 active clubs. Those clubs cover a broad spectrum of activities — from traditional agricultural pursuits like raising livestock and learning animal husbandry, to forward-looking programs in science, technology, engineering, and math, as well as community service efforts.

Free Fishing Clinics for Kids at St. Anthony’s Saturday

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — The Brandywine Trout and Conservation Club, organized in 1955, is bringing two free community events to Chester County youth this month. On Saturday, March 21, the club will host a kids' fishing clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Anthony's Lodge Banquet Hall, where children can learn the basics of fishing through hands-on instruction — including how to tie knots, bait hooks, and cast a line — as well as organized seminars. Hotdogs and drinks will be on hand. The following weekend, on Saturday, March 28, the fun continues with a kids' fishing rodeo at Kerr Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., giving young anglers a chance to apply what they've learned in a competitive, prize-eligible setting. Both events are entirely free, reflecting the club's longstanding commitment to conservation education and community engagement. Those interested in supporting the effort can donate in person or through the club's website at brandywinetrout.com.

Governor Shapiro Announces AI Task Force After West Chester Youth Roundtable

WEST CHESTER, PA — Gov. Josh Shapiro brought state and local leaders, educators, parents and students together in West Chester last week for a wide-ranging conversation about artificial intelligence and its effect on young people. Joined by Attorney General Dave Sunday, Shapiro announced two new initiatives: an AI Enforcement Task Force and a public AI literacy toolkit, already accessed by some 2,000 Pennsylvanians, available at pa.gov/aisafety.

Participants described a landscape in which children are increasingly exposed to AI systems that simulate human relationships, generate fabricated images of real people, and in some cases discourage users from seeking help or encourage self-harm. State Rep. Chris Pielli introduced legislation — House Bill 2215 — that would require age verification on AI platforms and ban minors from using AI companion applications or being targeted with harmful content.

Students raised nuanced concerns, including the tension between phone bans for mental health and the sense of security a device can provide in an uncertain school environment. Dr. Roger Harrison of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia highlighted chronic sleep deprivation driven by late-night phone use as a significant and underappreciated mental health threat.

West Chester Installs Bollards on Gay Street Ahead of Summer Market Season

WEST CHESTER, PA — Gay Street in West Chester is once again a construction zone, as the borough moves forward with a $1.7 million project to install permanent retractable bollards at three intersections — Darlington, Matlack, and High Streets. The bollards are designed to replace the painted concrete barriers that have been used since the borough launched its Gay Street Open Air Market during the pandemic, now entering its seventh year. This year's market opens May 1 and runs through September 27.

Contractor Marino Corporation is widening the roadway at each intersection from 17 to 20 feet to accommodate the new bollard platforms. Construction is proceeding two blocks at a time, with those segments fully closed around the clock during active work. A complete closure of Gay Street to vehicular traffic will be required at some point for concrete to cure — a period Interim Public Works Director Don Anderson estimates could run two weeks to a month. Chestnut Street is expected to absorb diverted traffic.
