DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Messiah Lutheran Church in Downingtown celebrated its grand reopening on Sunday, nearly five years after the remnants of Hurricane Ida flooded the building. The service included a bell procession into the rebuilt sanctuary, a dedication of the renewed spaces and a ribbon cutting.

The flood destroyed the church's organ, instruments and soundboard, and about 220,000 gallons of water had to be pumped out. Because the church's insurance did not cover flooding, FEMA provided $4.3 million for the renovations.

The rebuilding added flood protections. FEMA required the basement to be filled in, the new organ sits on a platform designed to float, and one section of the church was raised four feet. The project also added a multipurpose room and offices and restored the preschool, which has been closed for five years. Pastor Timothy Knauss, who has served since 2019, said the church hopes to bring the preschool back.

Knauss and church council member Nathan Fletcher said the congregation stayed together throughout, supported by the wider community.

WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY — West Chester University's Homecoming Week begins Monday and runs through Sept. 27. It includes student events, reunions for the classes of 1966 and 1976, and tailgates. The Golden Rams play Millersville at 2 p.m. Saturday, and a free Wind Ensemble concert closes the week Sunday. Officials expect heavy traffic in West Chester over the weekend. See more at WCUPA.edu

WEST CHESTER, PA — The Chester County Commissioners marked the Schuylkill River's designation as Pennsylvania's first National Water Trail with proclamations this week.

The Schuylkill River Water Trail runs from Schuylkill County to the Delaware River in Philadelphia, and about 23 miles of it cross northern Chester County.

Seung Ah Byun, director of the county's Water Resources Authority, accepted the recognition with her staff. Staff from Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area were also on hand.

MALVERN, PA — The West Chester Garden Club will hold its annual Flower Show, "Summer's End," on Thursday, Sept. 24, at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church, 686 Sugartown Road, Malvern. The show is open to the public from noon to 2:30 p.m.

Exhibits fall into three divisions: horticulture, photography and Pot et Fleur, which combines rooted plants with cut flowers. Show chair Jen Patterson said the exhibits reflect the talent in the club and offer ideas for gardeners at every level. Judging will be complete before the doors open.
