DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Downingtown High School East turned its Sept. 18 football game into a showcase for inclusion, as the school's Best Buddies chapter celebrated its 14th year participating in Spread the Word. The global campaign, led by Best Buddies International and Special Olympics, works to promote acceptance of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Students and supporters filled the stands in neon colors, and the Cougars named Best Buddies members Billy Barger and Zach Westermann honorary captains, bringing them into pregame activities and the coin-toss ceremony. Chapter co-advisors Regina Sheehan and Amy Rowe said the event underscored the power of words and the school's goal of making every student feel valued. The chapter meets year-round, organizing activities focused on friendship, leadership and belonging.

COATESVILLE, PA — The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Sept. 24 that four noncitizens have been charged with election-related crimes in Philadelphia and Chester counties. Two are lawful permanent residents and two are in the country illegally, according to prosecutors.

Dilea Ochoa-Perez, 43, of Coatesville, a Mexican national, faces two counts of voting as a noncitizen for allegedly casting ballots in Chester County in 2022 and 2024, carrying up to two years in prison. Cliff Sanon, 39, of Philadelphia, a Haitian national, is accused of submitting eight fraudulent voter registration applications, including one ahead of the May 2026 primary, and of voting in 2022; he faces up to five years. Sade Guppy, 37, and Eduardo Gallardo Maldonado, 66, both lawful permanent residents, each face one count for allegedly voting in Philadelphia County, in 2022 and 2024 respectively, with up to one year in prison.

The cases were investigated by Homeland Security Investigations. The charges are allegations and have not resulted in convictions.

WEST CHESTER, PA — The Chester County Commissioners marked Military Sexual Trauma Awareness Day with a proclamation calling for more reporting, broader access to care and recognition of survivors in every branch of the military. They were joined by county Veteran Affairs Director Susie Fink, state Rep. Melissa Shusterman, a representative from U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan's office and Vietnam veteran advocate James Ulinski.

Military sexual trauma covers sexual harassment and assault experienced during service. Survivors can ask for the MST Coordinator at the Coatesville VA Medical Center or use the VA's free, private Beyond MST app. Local crisis support includes 988 (veterans press 1), the county crisis line at 610-280-3270, mobile crisis teams, the Valley Creek walk-in center, and the non-crisis Warmline at 866-846-2722. DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Downingtown pet owners can learn how to respond to an animal emergency at Save-A-Paw, taking place Saturday, Oct. 10, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kerr Park, 1 Park Lane. The Animal Hospital at Thorndale will demonstrate dog CPR and first aid at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., covering steps owners can take while getting their pet to a veterinarian.

Minquas Fire Company No. 2's EMS team will offer quick human CPR sessions from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., display emergency equipment and give residents a chance to meet local first responders. Those planning to join a human CPR session are asked to register ahead of time through SignUpGenius.
