COATESVILLE, PA — The Western Chester County Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 110th anniversary on Tuesday with a gathering of more than 100 members at the Stottsville Inn, a historic property dating to 1853. The milestone reflects a dramatic turnaround for an organization that had just 80 members as recently as 2000; it now boasts more than 400 members across 116 industries and 24 municipalities, along with a fivefold increase in its programming.

The chamber's origins date to 1916, when steel and utility executives in Coatesville convened to establish what was then called the Coatesville Board of Trade. Chamber leaders, including Board President Alissa Griffith and Director Rachel Cathell, used the anniversary to highlight the organization's resilience through economic ups and downs, crediting sustained member engagement for its longevity.

County Commissioners Josh Maxwell and Eric Roe both spoke at the event, crediting the chamber with decades of advocacy on issues ranging from transportation and utilities to health care and workforce development. Maxwell specifically cited the chamber's historical involvement in coal drives, the Route 30 Bypass, and SEPTA service restoration, while also nodding to the inn's reputation for ghost sightings. Roe emphasized the chamber's outsized role in the region's economic history, noting its impact spans more than 40 percent of the nation's existence.

LIONVILLE, PA — The Lionville Fire Company has completed a major equipment upgrade, giving every air pack on its fire trucks its own thermal imaging camera. The improvement, supported in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner's Office, replaces a system in which crews previously shared just one or two such devices per truck during emergencies.

Thermal imaging cameras detect heat rather than relying on visible light, enabling firefighters to see clearly in total darkness or through thick smoke — conditions that would otherwise force crews to search for victims blindly. Fire officials noted that the technology serves several critical functions: it helps locate people who need rescue more quickly, reveals fires burning inside walls, ceilings, or floors before they spread further, and gives firefighters a clearer sense of their surroundings while moving through a building. The cameras also remain useful after a fire has been put out, allowing crews to scan for hidden hot spots that could reignite.

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — A Downingtown-area Boy Scout is asking the community for support as he works to complete his Eagle Scout project. Case Gibbons, a member of Marshalton Troop 19, is aiming to plant at least 30 trees in the area behind Downingtown Borough Hall, a project intended to provide shade, protect the riverbank from erosion, and create habitat for native wildlife.

To fund the initiative, Gibbons is seeking to raise $3,000 to cover the cost of trees and the materials needed to protect them as they take root. He plans to carry out the planting in late October or early November of this year, and is inviting both financial contributions and volunteer help from the community.

Organizers say the project will also include a memorial tag option, allowing donors to dedicate a tree in honor or memory of someone, with details to be shared individually with participants.
