Auction of Historic St. Peter's Village Is Called Off Before Bidding Begins

WARWICK TWP — About 75 people came to the Desmond Hotel in Malvern last Wednesday to watch St. Peter's Village sold at auction. The sale was postponed before any bids were placed. Piazza Management, the owner, blamed problems with online bidding and on-site phone communications, and has not announced a new date. One report says a buyer may have surfaced, but that is unconfirmed.

The village dates to the mid-1800s, when it served local miners and quarry workers, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The sale covers about 83 acres, with 13 historic and commercial buildings, including a bakery, a boutique, an antique shop and an inn with a licensed tavern. It also includes more than 100 potential home sites and water and wastewater treatment facilities. The auction had no minimum bid, though participants needed a $150,000 cashier's check to take part.

Auctioneers reported thousands of inquiries, some from village residents. Piazza assembled the land between 2003 and 2008 and planned about 121 home sites, but the project stalled after the economic downturn. Finishing it would require upgrading the wastewater plant, and some residents fear new homes could strain the local aquifer. Other proposals include a wine and alpaca farm, trails, wedding venues and wellness retreats.

QVC Volunteers Clear Invasive Growth Along the Struble Trail

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — A volunteer team from QVC recently spent a day removing invasive vegetation along the Struble Trail, according to Chester County Parks + Preservation. The work took place between the site of a former dam and the pipeline cut-through, where overgrowth had blocked views of the Brandywine.

With the vegetation cut back, the creek can again be seen from that part of the trail. This was the second year in a row that QVC employees have volunteered on the same section.
